Zoe Saldana’s Stylist: How to Freshen Your Wardrobe Right Now

Apr 13, 2013 @ 10:30 am

Zoe Saldana’s longtime stylist, Petra Flannery, knows a thing or two about how to change up a wardrobe, which is why we turned to her to find out how to brighten up our spring closets. Running low on time? Shift your focus, Flannery suggests. “Freshen up your tops—everybody always has jeans and their little black jacket, but sometimes mix it up with fresh new tops,” Flannery told InStyle.com. “Also, try different necklines. That way you have your favorite pants, but you can make it look different.” Saldana followed this tip with her fun summery blouse, which she paired with a pair of moto-style denim (right). “Petra has been influential in my closet, but I run with it,” Saldana noted. “Sometimes she’s proud of me when I come see her for coffee!”

Watch Zoë Saldana on the Set of Her InStyle Cover Shoot!

Apr 2, 2013 @ 4:52 pm

Zoë Saldana is InStyle’s annual Hair issue cover girl—and now we can take you behind the scenes of her ultra-glamorous cover shoot! Of course, the Star Trek into Darkness star shows off her luscious hair in a number of different styles in the clip (watch it above!), but that’s not the only accessory Saldana knows how to work. Decked out in designer brands like Dior, Gucci, and Givenchy by Ricardo Tisci, the actress shows she’s still got a few modeling tricks up her sleeve (she got her start posing for designers like Calvin Klein). “I like androgyny,” the star told InStyle of her preferred sense of fashion. “I don’t feel like myself when I’m looking pretty. But every now and then, maybe four or five times a year, I just want to be a girl and look like a cherry apple.” She certainly pulled out all the stops for our shoot; watch her strut her stuff above! Read the full exclusive interview and see more photos by picking up InStyle Hair, on newsstands—and downloadable for your tablets!—starting Friday, April 5.

Zoe Saldana Covers the Annual InStyle Hair Issue!

Once a year, InStyle puts out a special issue dedicated to the unique art of hair, and for 2013, our cover girl is Zoë Saldana! Much like the roles she chooses—including Star Trek into Darkness, out May 17—she is bold, a word that also describes her thoughts on hair. “In Latino culture, hair carries a lot of history, a lot of weight, and a lot of energy,” she told InStyle Hair. “I always liked my hair. I never wanted to have any other skin but my own, any other hair but my own. Women who spend so much of their lives wanting to have something else miss out on learning to appreciate what they do have.” It’s a strong sense of self she learned from her tight-knit family. “[My mother] always said, ‘Honey, there is nothing that a red lipstick and a pair of red shoes can’t heal, cure, or solve.’ And I absolutely believe that. They can get you out of anything, even the biggest funk of your life.” She’s already tried more than a few major hairstyles—check out the faux bob, chic updo (shown), and sleek ponytail she models in the issue—and she still has some her daredevil hair days to come. “At some point I want to chop mine off and learn to enhance my other virtues, instead of depending so much on my hair,” she said. Now that’s hair power! Read the full exclusive interview and see more photos by picking up InStyle Hair, on newsstands—and downloadable for your tablets!—starting Friday, April 5.

The stars stepped out in bulk to celebrate their stylists at THR‘s Top Stylist Luncheon last week! And while these dressing mavens see their famous clients ’round the clock, we were charmed to discover that even Petra Flannery, who styles Emma Stone, Zoe Saldana, and Claire Danes, gets starstruck when she sees one of her actresses in the perfect look. Her top 2013 looks so far: Danes at the Golden Globes in Versace Couture. “It was made and we were only able to try it on the night before! It was such a triumphant moment to have it all work out.” She also loved Saldana, who stood by her stylist’s side throughout the event, in that ruffled Alexis Mabille dress for this year’s Oscars. And finally, she told us that she adored Stone’s all-red Lanvin look for the Gangster Squad premiere. “It was one of those moments where the more you started adding, the better it got,” she said, referencing the addition of crimson heels and a ruby necklace. “It was a glamorous ’80s look, but because she’s modern and fresh and youthful, she pulled it off.” And we agreed—all of these ensembles made their way into our Look of the Day roundup!

Check out more of the looks we’ve loved in our Look of the Day lookbook.

Hollywood’s most influential stylists and their devoted celebrity clients gathered yesterday at Soho House in West Hollywood to attend The Hollywood Reporter & Jimmy Choo’s Top Stylist luncheon. The fete celebrated the industry’s twenty-five most powerful stylists, as named by The Hollywood Reporter in their second annual Top Stylists issue. And stars like Zoe Saldana (in Carven), Nina Dobrev (in Max Mara), and Naomi Watts (in Erdem) were all on-hand to support the women who help them turn heads—both on and off the red carpet. “I just know whatever she puts together for me, I’ll feel like the prettiest girl in the room,” Saldana said of her long-time stylist, Petra Flannery (second left). “I wish every girl felt that way.” Actress Naomi Watts also gushed about her stylist, Jeanann Williams (far right). “The great thing about working together is that we know each other so well. We spend a lot of time together. She has the kind of style and fashion sense that I’ve spied on for years.” We want to share them, too!

Oscars 2013 Exclusive: What It Takes to Prep Zoe Saldana’s Beautiful Makeup Look

Feb 25, 2013 @ 2:57 pm

Zoe Saldana’s gorgeous beauty look was created by makeup artist Vera Steimberg—and she spoke exclusively to InStyle.com about how she created the look. Her approach: Fashion is always the starting point. “I was inspired by the classic French silhouette of her Alexis Mabille gown,” Steimberg said. “It’s teamwork—we all try to agree on what and where we want the look to go.” After trying several lipsticks with the dress—to visualize the look as a whole—she settled on Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Hydrating Sheer Lipshine in Chic ($34, chanel.com), a sheer pink with a hint of shimmer, a soft lip color that “perfectly complemented the gray in her dress.” As for her skin, Steimberg prepped the presenter’s flawless complexion with Chanel Hydra Beauty Serum ($98, chanel.com)  and combined two different shades of foundation: Chanel Vitalumière Aqua 44 Beige Ambre and 94 Ambre ($45, chanel.com) to match her skintone. Of the pre-party primping, Steimberg noted, “It was fun and I love working with her. We listened to Pandora and Rihanna. We laughed and sang while we were getting her ready!” Sounds like it!
