Nicole Richie: ‘I Actually Don’t Know How to Put on Makeup’

Jan 6, 2012 @ 10:15 am

As a red carpet regular and House of Harlow 1960 and Winter Kate designer, Nicole Richie is a fashionista in every sense of the term. But when it comes to beauty, Richie admits she could use a few pointers. “I actually don’t know how to put on makeup—at all,” she told InStyle.com at a recent party for Dior Beaute. “I have to get it done every time I want to wear makeup. I do not know how to wear it at all. It’s so bad.” However, all is not lost: “I can do my own hair, but I can not do makeup. I don’t even own it. I only own undereye concealer, Maybelline mascara, and an eyelash curler.” Tell us: How do you feel about putting on makeup?

Nicole Richie Dishes on Spring Collections: “Very Lolita-esque!”

Nicole Richie has her hands full fashion-wise, with two successful collections to her name: Winter Kate, a contemporary ready-to-wear collection, and House of Harlow 1960, a line of costume jewelry and shoes. We sat down with Richie to get the scoop on her new spring collections, her styling tricks  and the plausibility of a children’s line in the near future. (Plus, check out our exclusive preview of the Winter Kate lookbook, above!)

InStyle.com: What was your inspiration for the Spring 2011 Winter Kate collection?

Nicole Richie: A lot of the inspiration was drawn from my mother–the way she dressed when I was growing up was very feminine and sexy, but in an innocent, demure way. I also love the way French gypsies mix, wrap and layer their look.

InStyle.com: So how did you translate that aesthetic into your line?

Nicole Richie: It’s very Lolita-esque, like jumpsuits, rompers, high-waisted shorts and girlie camisoles. But the Kimono-inspired piece is one of my favorites—it is truly a part of the Winter Kate identity. More

Nicole Richie’s Family Goes Green

Apr 22, 2010 @ 11:55 am

Nicole Richie kicked Earth Day off by getting crafty at West Hollywood boutique Satine last night. The fashion designer was on hand to support Dasani’s Green Cap program, which highlights do-it-yourself projects as a way to live greener. “We are actually pretty green over at my house,” Richie, who wore a vintage kimono, told us. “We go as far as taking out our phone chargers when we’re not using them. We turn off our power when we leave town…and we use recycled plates and cups.” Using everyday items from sweatpants to rubber bands, Richie created her own green knit cap, which she lined with studs. Does she plan to incorporate sustainable materials in her Winter Kate and House of Harlow 1960 lines? “We’re definitely exploring that option,” she said. “Obviously it’s the smarter choice so I think myself and most designers are working our way into that world.”
