While the true red lipstick Carey Mulligan wore to the Cannes Film Festival yesterday could have doubled as a hue worn by her ’20s-era Great Gatsby character Daisy Buchanan, the precise shape and her clean skin gave the look a current edge. “It’s a big statement for her and we wanted to keep it as modern as possible,” said her makeup artist Georgie Eisdell, who used the NARS hue in Jungle Red ($26; narscosmetics.com). “I loved the idea of contrast with her pale pink dress, and I thought a red lip would be striking.” Before sweeping on the color, Eisdell lined the star’s lips using the matching Jungle Red lip pencil ($24; narscosmetics.com).
