The Oscars party circuit is still on fire in Hollywood leading up to tomorrow’s big festivities! Co-stars reunited when best leading actress nominee Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and Viola Davis paused for a snap at the Sixth Annual Women in Film pre-Oscars reception, held at Fig & Olive in Los Angeles and hosted by their fellow co-star and Academy Award winner, Octavia Spencer. (The group starred together in last year’s tearjerker The Help). Meanwhile, new parents and True Blood co-stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer coordinated their navy blue outfits at the Great British Film Reception, which was held at the home of the British Consul, General Dame Barbara Hay.

Beautiful Creatures: Why Emmy Rossum Loved Her Cool Movie Costumes

Feb 15, 2013 @ 10:20 am

Beautiful Creatures is now open in theaters, and it’s a story that will have you focused just as much on the costuming as the romance at the center of the plot. Why? Because, while the film tells the love story between Lena (Alice Englert) and Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich), Emmy Rossum’s character Ridley Duchannes adds a stylish element to the dynamic—on purpose—with Victorian goth-like costumes created by costume designer Jeffrey Kurland. “A lot of who my character is, is her ability to manipulate people in the way she looks,” Rossum told InStyle.com at the New York premiere. “She dresses up and channels different old Hollywood movie stars like Marilyn Monroe in River of No Return or Rita Hayworth in Gilda. So, there are a lot of big moments that are carbon copies of the way the actresses looked in those films.” And she loved it! “It was really fun to re-create. It was definitely very different than anything else I’ve ever played before,” Rossum said.

Parties of the Week: Viola Davis and Emmy Rossum Premiere Beautiful Creatures and More!

Feb 12, 2013 @ 4:53 pm

There really were some Beautiful Creatures on the film’s New York premiere red carpet last night! Stars Emmy Rossum (in Christian Dior) and Viola Davis (in New York & Company) screened the film at the Tribeca Cinemas, and told InStyle.com how their fantastical costuming helped tell the boy-meets-girl tale with a magical twist. “A lot of who [my character] Ridley is, is her ability to manipulate people with the way she looks,” Rossum told InStyle.com at the event, hosted by The Cinema Society and Dior Beauty. “It was definitely very different than anything else I’ve ever played before, and a lot of the looks were very throwback, channeling Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth.” See the costumes for yourself when the film opens Valentine’s Day.

“I think it’s so incredible!” Carolina Herrera told InStyle.com of Fashion Group International 29th Annual Night of Stars Gala last night, held at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, which honors the industry’s biggest stars. The always-elegant Herrera radiated a joyful glow all evening, and for good reason—she earned the acclaimed fashion organization’s prestigious Superstar Award, presented to her by her close friend Renee Zellweger. “Carolina Herrera helps women see themselves with confidence and celebrates their great life by making them unforgettable,” Zellweger told the attendees, which also included Kelly Ripa and Seth Meyers’s girlfriend Alexi Ashe dressed in Herrera designs. “She is a visionary.” The gala’s theme, Dream Catchers, also captured the feeling of dreams realized by the night’s Star honorees, Derek Lam (“I will continue to work hard to truly deserve this recognition,” he said), Gareth Pugh, and Haider Ackermann (the latter accepted his honor from Karl Lagerfeld). Meanwhile, Sarah Jessica Parker presented the Lord & Taylor Fashion Oracle award to L’Wren Scott—“She has the ability to telescope what’s necessary, what’s needed, and what people want,” Parker told InStyle.com—while Viola Davis presented the Brand Heritage Award to Max Mara’s Nicola Maramotti. “It seems like every time I put on a Max Mara dress or a coat or a suit, it enhances what I am, it does not hide what I am,” she said of the brand. “Fashion can not be worn, it has to enhance what’s already inside you.” With so many fashion stars in one place, Davis also emphasized that everyone has a little star quality in them, too. “It’s the people who are not afraid to take risks, the people who are confident and comfortable with themselves,” she told InStyle.com. We couldn’t agree more.

Women in Film hosted the annual Crystal + Lucy Awards at the Beverly Hilton last night, which celebrated women in the global entertainment, communication, and media industries. “I love women,” said Viola Davis, who accepted the evening’s Crystal Award from Meryl Streep (both in Max Mara). “I am not a catty woman.
