The MTV Video Music Awards are known for not playing by the same rules as other awards shows. True to form, this year’s VMAs started with a fresh perspective: a bright white carpet, and new host in Chelsea Handler. The night’s most-nominated rule-breaker Lady Gaga set the white carpet ablaze when she stepped out in a stunning look from Alexander McQueen’s final collection, accessorized with a gilded feather mohawk headpiece. It’s been almost three decades since the first-ever MTV Video Music Awards. And from the very beginning, stars like Madonna aimed to please their fans by shocking them, with a combination of risqué routines—remember that “Like A Virgin” floor dance?—and outré fashion. So, in anticipation of the award show’s 27^th iteration, which airs on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. EST, InStyle looks back at five of the most memorable VMA performances and appearances ever, and wonders: Can we still be shocked, or have we seen it all? Evan Rachel Wood & Gucci Get Comic-Book Cool

Evan Rachel Wood stars alongside Chris Evan in Gucci’s ad campaign for their newest scent, Guilty, and a cool, new video of the two has been released. Directed by Frank Miller, the music video looks straight out of a comic book—or out of a scene from Miller’s film Sin City, based on his graphic novel. Lady Gaga Nabs 13 VMA Nods, Plus Katy & Taylor Face-Off

We always love watching MTV’s Video Music Awards for the fashion, music and fun. And this year should be no exception, judging by the list of nominees. Lady Gaga received 13 nominations, including two for Video of the Year—”Bad Romance” and her collaboration with Beyonce, “Telephone”. Eminem was the second-most nominated star, receiving 8 nods of his own. Other potential winners include Katy Perry and Taylor Swift, both for Best Female Video of the Year, as well as tween pop sensation Justin Bieber and his mentor, Usher.
