The boys who make up the British-Irish pop sensation One Direction elicited the loudest screams from the crowd gathered at the Staple Center for last week’s MTV Video Music Awards. Now that’s one way to pump up the volume! Last night at the 2012 MTV VMAs, Miley Cyrus transformed her edgy crop into a sky-high pompadour. Although it makes for a perfect red carpet statement, the style is also a fun option for longer pixie styles, or strands that are in the growing-out process. Start by spritzing a root lift spray onto damp strands, then blow-dry using your hands. Make sure to lift the hair upwards to build up the volume on top. Once most of the moisture is gone, use a boar bristle hairbrush to finish up and give the style extra height. Depending on how tall you want to make your pompadour, begin backcombing your strands at the roots, then conceal it by sweeping a layer of un-teased hair over the top. Smooth a pomade along the sides of your head to mold the style, and after a final mist of hairspray, you’re good to go!

We caught up with P!nk’s makeup artist, Kathy Jeung, and got the behind the scenes dish on the CoverGirl’s newest spokesperson’s super sexy look at the VMAs last night. A lot of prep work went into the superstar’s beauty style—Jeung showed P!nk 8-10 sketches before the show! In the end fashion dictated the decision, “Seeing her Stella McCartney red carpet dress in person, a glorious column of metallic gunmetal, confirmed my makeup idea: a soft metallic depth around the eyes and keeping the rest of her face soft, glowing and bronzed.” Jeung describes the pre-game vibe as warm and comfortable, “Alecia (P!nk’s given name) usually likes to play music from her playlists, but on VMA day we were blessed with a visit by Willow, so her giggles and laughter were our music!” Jeung adds, “Since we only had a short amount of time for a makeup change for her performance look, we both loved the idea of a red carpet look that I could quickly transform in one or two steps.” Click through the gallery to see her next look!
