Hair Makeover: Katharine McPhee Chopped Her Lob Into a Bob

Mar 29, 2013 @ 10:50 am

Katharine McPhee was a Smash last night on American Idol, thanks in part to a brand new haircut! The AI alumna chopped her ombre shoulder-skimming waves into a chin-length bob, which she debuted during her performance with One Republic. When we last spoke to McPhee, she told InStyle.com that her style inspiration was Diane Keaton, so it’s no surprise to see the star working her icon’s signature ‘do. Last Night on Smash: Jennifer Hudson’s Diamond Jewelry Featured 37 Carats

Feb 27, 2013 @ 5:07 pm

The latest episode of Smash featured Jennifer Hudson‘s Veronica Moore putting on a “Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall”-esque one-woman show, and she was dripping in diamonds for the occasion. And as it turns out, all those jewels were real, too! Jacob & Co. shared close-up looks at the chandelier earrings and cocktail ring Hudson wore on-set. The teardrop earrings boasted 23 carats worth of irregular cut and white diamonds, while the finger bauble shined studded with 14 carats of pave diamonds. Nothing but the best for a fictional Tony sensation and real Oscar winner! Tell us: Are you loving Smash‘s new glam style?

Smash Season 2 Premieres! What “Director Derek Wills” Thinks

Feb 5, 2013 @ 1:34 pm

Smash is back and it’s going to be better than ever! The television series about what it takes to make it on Broadway returns for it’s second season tonight, and with the new season comes a chance for everyone on the Bombshell team to reinvent themselves—including Jack Davenport’s lovably ornery director, Derek Wills. “Aspects of Derek’s personality kind of come back to haunt him quite significantly, which is probably no bad thing—growth has to come somewhere,” the actor told InStyle.com at the premiere of the Donna Karan short “Haven’t We Met Before,” which he starred in and his Smash co-star Anjelica Huston directed. But that doesn’t mean everything has changed: “The unique selling point of our show is that there aren’t any other shows on television about Broadway out there, so we kind of doubled down on that. The drama is very much contained within the work place in a way that it wasn’t quite so much last year. There are more songs—more of the things that only we have.” More of the things we love—not to mention a few new things, like guest stars Jennifer Hudson and Broadway’s Jeremy Jordan. Tune in to NBC at 9 pm. EST tonight to watch Smash 2.0. Break a leg, everyone!

How NBC’s Smash Is Involved in Donna Karan’s Leggy New Video

Feb 4, 2013 @ 4:29 pm

Jack Davenport and Anjelica Huston don’t just play friends on NBC’s Smash, they’re real friends in real life. That’s why Huston called upon her pal to star in Haven’t We Met Before, the new short film she directed for Donna Karan’s Evolution hosiery collection, and together they debuted the result at Donna Karan‘s Urban Zen store in the West Village over the weekend. “If she says jump, I’ll say how high?” Davenport told InStyle.com of how he got involved with the film, which he had agreed to after Huston asked him on the set of Smash. “It’s always nice to work with someone you work with in one capacity, and see them working in another one. It was as lovely as I expected it to be.” For the film, which you can watch above, Huston focused on the sensuality of the legs—it is for hosiery, after all!—casting Felicity Jones as the love interest to Davenport. “She’s so easy, beautiful, easy, the perfect girl,” Huston added. As for her Smash buddy Jack? “He’s a particularly handsome one and talented one, so it seemed like looking a gift horse in the mouth, as it were,” she said. “Not that I would ever refer to him as a horse,” she joked.

Jennifer Hudson on Her Role in Smash: “It’s All Glamour: Full-On Hair!”

Jan 27, 2013 @ 12:00 pm

InStyle caught up with Oscar winner, singer, and all-around renaissance woman Jennifer Hudson inside our Sundance Film Festival lounge, where she took a break from promoting her starring role as addict Gloria in The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete to talk about her other big new role: that of ultra-diva Veronica on NBC’s Smash. “You know what’s funny is that I actually filmed these projects at the same time, and they are so opposite,” Hudson told InStyle.com. “I’m going from this huge, drastic, glamour girl, full-on hair, full-on makeup, sequin dresses, heels, huge lights, and stages—to being Gloria the next day.” The show comes back Tuesday, February 5 at 9/8c—tune in to catch Hudson in action underneath Broadway’s bright lights!

Watch: This Smash Season 2 Preview Is the Best One Yet

Jan 7, 2013 @ 11:09 am

“It’s going to be quite a show,” Jennifer Hudsons character Veronica Moore says in the new extra-long trailer for the new season of Smash (watch it above!). She’s talking about her fictional Broadway show, of course, though she may as well be discussing the new approach for the second season of the show, which returns to NBC Tuesday, February 5th. The new episodes are full of promise—with new characters (Broadway heartthrob Jeremy Jordan gets a big storyline, Sean Hayes has a reunion with Will & Grace co-star Debra Messing, and Jennifer Hudson gets to show off her big voice in a big way, just to name a few), new storylines (Ivy’s fighting for Bombshell, Karen’s struggling with love and work, and Julia’s trying to get her life back together), and a new showrunner (John Safran from Gossip Girl leads the cast). “Let’s give ‘em a show they’ll never forget,” Hayes’s character Terrence Falls says in the preview above. We’re all waiting for it! Watch the trailer above for a sneak peek.
