How Mad Men’s Costume Designer Dressed Betty Francis for Her Hair Makeover

“It was so crazy!” Mad Men’s costume designer Janie Bryant said of the hair makeover Betty Francis (January Jones) debuted on last night’s season six premiere. It’s a sentiment the fans felt, too—we were as surprised as her husband to see her “Elizabeth Taylor” look!—which is why we found out how the costumes played into this transition moment. “Because she walked in with a new hair color, I put her in a color she’s never worn before,” Bryant said of the vintage berry suit worn by the character. “I bought the suit couple years ago and was waiting for the right moment, for the right character to be able to wear it. This was the perfect moment. It still tells the story of Betty being the politician’s wife, but it’s a shift for her.” So, does this mean more looks like this to come? Perhaps: “It’s interesting to just play with being able to try different colors for her costumes,” Bryant noted.

Mad Men Season 6 Premieres Tonight! See Last Season’s Best Looks

Apr 7, 2013 @ 12:00 pm

Fans of AMC’s critically acclaimed show Mad Men don’t have to wait much longer! The drama-filled program set in the late-1960s world of Manhattan advertising firms makes its epic return to the airwaves tonight at 9/8c. When we last left Don and Megan Draper, Joan Holloway, Peggy Olson, and the rest of the crew from advertising firm Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, Don was sitting in his most natural habitat, suggesting a return to his pre-Megan, philandering ways: at a bar, being approached by an attractive woman, while Megan shoots a commercial in the background. He and Peggy had mended their relationship after reuniting randomly in a movie theater, Pete and Beth (real-life fiancés!) ended their affair, and Roger continued his own. But more important than all this: in season five, the fashion evolved from early-60s era retro to late-60s disco-infused looks. Emmy-winning costume designer Janie Bryant talked to InStyle.com about the season’s best looks and why she loved them. Click through the gallery below to find out why! And tune in to AMC tonight at 9/8c to catch all the action as it unfolds.

Christina Hendricks on Mad Men Season 6 Fashion: “It’s A Little Bit More Mod”

Apr 7, 2013 @ 10:00 am

With the Mad Men Season 6 premiere not too far off in the horizon, die-hard fans of the show are already on the edge of their seats and in the throws of preparing for their watch parties tonight. And while the plot progression is foremost on everyone’s mind, not too far behind is how everyone is going to be dressed in tonight’s episode. Creator Matthew Weiner and the rest of the cast and crew infamously keep the show’s timeline under wraps until the season premiere, but star Christina Hendricks (right, in a shot from the upcoming season) gave us a little hint into what we can expect. “Well, I can’t say too much about what year it is, but obviously because we know where we left off last season, we’re definitely getting to the later 1960s,” Hendricks told InStyle.com at Ashlee Margolis’ Spring Soiree with Theodora & Callum. “I think you can see from [costume designer] Janie Bryant’s designs for Banana Republic that things are getting a little groovier and a little bit more mod.” And there’s one evolution she’s particularly excited about. “I think my favorite thing about this season are the men’s clothes. The men’s clothes are really different and really great!” Ooh la la!

Jessica Paré Reveals Her Four Favorite Mad Men Costumes

Apr 5, 2013 @ 7:30 am

For InStyle’s March Issue, Mad Men star Jessica Paré, who plays Don’s secretary-turned-wife Megan Draper, traded her ‘60s era looks for more modern styles, but with AMC’s hit show returning this Sunday, we had to know which of her many glamorous looks from season 5 were her favorites.”Every once in a while you’ll find something that’s really perfect for a scene but it doesn’t fit quite right,” Paré says in the video above. “This dress had been through so many alterations over the years, that you just can’t quite get it where you want it to be. It was one of my favorites, but it was probably of the more annoying ones to wear.” To see which dress she’s referring to, as well as her other three picks, watch the video above, and then click through the gallery to see what the show’s Emmy-winning costume designer, Janie Bryant, had to say about the same looks! Be sure to tune into Mad Men this Sunday when season 6 premieres at 9/8c on AMC. More
