Dancing With The Stars Costumes: Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff’s Finale Looks

May 21, 2013 @ 4:35 pm

With Season 16 of Dancing With The Stars coming to an end, Karina Smirnoff and partner Jacoby Jones transformed the ballroom into one giant party for their final dance of the season. And they had tap-dancing kids, drummers, and step-dancers join them! The duo freestyled to Macklemore’s “Can’t Hold Us” in fringe outfits decked out in Jones’s Baltimore Ravens colors. ”I wanted to represent Jacoby’s hometown for our freestyle and I wanted the audience to smile when they saw us dance,” Smirnoff told InStyle.com. “We wanted to make it a celebration on the dance floor!” With Mardi Gras, Bourbon Street, confetti, and beads on her mind, Smirnoff focused on embellishments. “The shoulder piece was made out of jewels and beading. It was connected to a glittery, purple bralet.” The performance embodied what the couple brought to the competition each week: energy and fun. Find out if they are able to win the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy on tonight’s live results show at 9/8c on ABC.

What was going on with Mad Men?! Drugs, burglars, funerals—it was a memorable episode to say the least, even if we’re not quite sure what to make of it. One thing we do know: Once again, the costumes swept us right into the world of the late ’60s, thanks to the work of costume designer Janie Bryant. “The show is so great because it’s not about one thing,” Bryant told InStyle.com. “It’s so multi-layered, and that’s how we are in life. There are so many characters.” Click to get the inside scoop on the costumes from this week’s episode.

Shakira’s Stylists Share the Scoop on Her Looks from The Voice

Last week, the top 12 contestants on The Voice battled it out live to make it to the final stage of the competition. So who’s the real showstopper of the season so far? Coach Shakira! InStyle.com got the scoop on her gorgeous hairdos from her pro stylist, Kim Kimble. On last Monday night’s live round, Kimble complemented the singer’s white Sarli Couture crystal embroidered jacket by raking her strands into a high ponytail with loose curls. “We wanted to juxtapose her ornate jacket with soft, pulled-back hair,” Kimble told us exclusively. “It really allowed the jacket to shine.” The following night, Shakira went full-on glam in an ombre silk chiffon dress with crystal detailing by Amen. “The clothes always dictate the look,” said Kimble of her choice to create soft, flowing waves. To get the look, she used a flat iron rather than a traditional curling iron. “A flat iron creates more of a softer, flatter wave, so its not as bouncy; it’s just a bit sexier.” Her pro tip? “Don’t clamp down hard on the iron, you don’t want any creases or dents—it should look soft.” The Voice airs tonight and tomorrow at 8/7c on NBC.

The American Idol season finale is tonight! This year’s final is a girl power battle with Candice Glover and Kree Harrison both vying for the No. 1 title. As much as we’ve seen their vocals develop over the season, both singers’ styles also got an upgrade, too, as they traded in their girl-next-door wardrobes for stage-ready ensembles. Last night, Glover went rocker-chic route in leather accents and frayed leggings, while Texas native Harrison channeled her inner diva with an elegant floor-length gown. Now we want to know: Who had the most dramatic makeover? Answer in our poll below, and be sure to catch the finale tonight at 8 PM EST on FOX to find out who wins! More

Exclusive: What Olivia Pope Wears on Scandal’s Season Finale Tonight

Scandal fans got a special treat during the unveiling of ABC’s new fall programming this week with an exclusive sneak peek at the show’s explosive season finale. Trust us, something shocking is about to happen to Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) and it goes way beyond the White House mole Pope’s “Gladiators” have been hunting down (and whose identity will finally be revealed!). But, let’s face it, what we’ve all really been waiting to see is what will happen between the steamiest twosome on TV, Olivia and Fitz, now that their affair is going public. Luckily, Scandal’s brilliant costume designer Lyn Paolo gave us some inside scoop on tonight’s finale—and a lesson in power dressing! Contrasting last week’s darker tones, Paolo told us you can expect to see her in lighter hues. “It has been a long time since she has been this certain of her relationship with Fitz and suddenly we are back in lighter suits,” she told InStyle.com exclusively. Case in point: The pale blue Armani jacket over a cream Natori shell Olivia wears in her office (above). In true Scandal fashion though, nothing is as it seems and, “by the end of the episode, Olivia is a gladiator in a white Tom Ford jacket with crisp clean lines and a tight clasp holding in her mid-line,” Paolo said. “Her waist is accentuated and her shoulders look broad enough to carry any weight.” The weight of the presidency no doubt. Cliffhangers somehow seem easier to take in Tom Ford. Tune in to Scandal tonight at 10 p.m. EST on ABC for the dramatic season finale. We. Can’t. Wait.

New Girl Costume Designer: All the Details on CeCe’s Wedding Dress

May 15, 2013 @ 4:00 pm

Congratulations, CeCe! Hannah Simone’s character got hitched on last night’s second season finale of New Girl, which meant costume designer Deb McGuire had to make the clothes look and feel authentic for a traditional Indian wedding. To do so, she purchased a lehenga, a traditional Indian wedding gown, in the Little India section of Los Angeles, Artesia, one of her go-to spots for two decades. “When I heard we were doing an Indian wedding for our final episode I planned a shopping day with my crew, including lunch at my favorite Indian vegetarian restaurant,” McGuire told us. “The red wedding sari that Cece wears was the first of four that we picked out. When she put it on, it took our breath away. We didn’t even attempt to consider the others!” The challenge was picking an equally beautiful sari for Jess (Zooey Deschanel) to make sure she stood out among the other guests clad in jewel-tone looks. “The blue trimmed in pink was perfection, especially because I could envision it looking smashing against the orange decor,” McGuire said. “The visual, indeed, made  me gasp with delight. Color is powerful!” To learn more about Zooey Deschanel’s New Girl fashion, visit possessionista.com.

Dancing With The Stars Costumes: Karina Smirnoff’s Flirty Semi-Finals Look

May 14, 2013 @ 5:30 pm

Despite being hospitalized due to injuries earlier in the week, Karina Smirnoff brought her signature energy and expert dance moves to the ninth episode of Dancing With The Stars—the semi-finals! This time, she and her football pro partner Jacoby Jones went for flirty costumes for their two dances, the Argentine Tango and Lindy Hop. “For our first dance, the tango, I wanted the dress to resonate with the darkness of the dance, like a woman walking around the back alleys of Buenos Aires looking for trouble,” Smirnoff told InStyle.com. “The dress for the Lindy Hop (shown) was flirtatious, but it was all about the ’50s and polka dots. I designed it to flow while we flipped around the dance floor.” At the end of it all, their persistence worked: The two managed to achieve their first ever perfect score and tied for first place—one step closer to the Mirrorball Trophy! Find out if they make it to the next round on tonight’s live results show at 9/8c on ABC.
