Who Had the Most Dramatic American Idol Makeover: Candice or Kree?

The American Idol season finale is tonight! This year’s final is a girl power battle with Candice Glover and Kree Harrison both vying for the No. 1 title. As much as we’ve seen their vocals develop over the season, both singers’ styles also got an upgrade, too, as they traded in their girl-next-door wardrobes for stage-ready ensembles. Last night, Glover went rocker-chic route in leather accents and frayed leggings, while Texas native Harrison channeled her inner diva with an elegant floor-length gown. Now we want to know: Who had the most dramatic makeover? Answer in our poll below, and be sure to catch the finale tonight at 8 PM EST on FOX to find out who wins! More

Exclusive: What Olivia Pope Wears on Scandal’s Season Finale Tonight

Scandal fans got a special treat during the unveiling of ABC’s new fall programming this week with an exclusive sneak peek at the show’s explosive season finale. Trust us, something shocking is about to happen to Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) and it goes way beyond the White House mole Pope’s “Gladiators” have been hunting down (and whose identity will finally be revealed!). But, let’s face it, what we’ve all really been waiting to see is what will happen between the steamiest twosome on TV, Olivia and Fitz, now that their affair is going public. Luckily, Scandal’s brilliant costume designer Lyn Paolo gave us some inside scoop on tonight’s finale—and a lesson in power dressing! Contrasting last week’s darker tones, Paolo told us you can expect to see her in lighter hues. “It has been a long time since she has been this certain of her relationship with Fitz and suddenly we are back in lighter suits,” she told InStyle.com exclusively. Case in point: The pale blue Armani jacket over a cream Natori shell Olivia wears in her office (above). In true Scandal fashion though, nothing is as it seems and, “by the end of the episode, Olivia is a gladiator in a white Tom Ford jacket with crisp clean lines and a tight clasp holding in her mid-line,” Paolo said. “Her waist is accentuated and her shoulders look broad enough to carry any weight.” The weight of the presidency no doubt. Cliffhangers somehow seem easier to take in Tom Ford. Tune in to Scandal tonight at 10 p.m. EST on ABC for the dramatic season finale. We. Can’t. Wait.

Revenge’s Costume Designer Hints at What to Expect for Tonight’s Season Finale

May 12, 2013 @ 3:30 pm

Talk about bittersweet: While we’re sad to see another season of Revenge come to an end tonight, we can’t wait to see what happens with Emily (Emily Van Camp) and Daniel’s on-again, off-again engagement, not to mention the plot twists and chic sartorial choices that are sure to come. “It gets a little dark! Some hard and sad things happen,” the show’s costume designer Jill Ohanneson hinted. “A lot of what Emily had to do was very function-oriented, she has a lot going on, so expect her to look a little more casual this time.” Sounds like big things are in store for Emily—as well as Victoria (Madeline Stowe), who somehow manages to keep her outfits looking fantastic, even throughout all the drama. “Madeline has some beautiful outfits that are emotionally interesting for what’s going on in the scene,” she added. Intrigued? Watch the Revenge season finale tonight at 9 p.m. EST on ABC to find out what happens.

Costume Designer Insider: Olivia Pope’s Subtle Clothing Cues on Scandal

May 9, 2013 @ 2:00 pm
ScandalABC/Nicole Wilder

The hunt for the White House mole continues and—more importantly!—Olivia (Kerry Washington) and Fitz’s (Tony Goldwyn) relationship is about to get real on this week’s all-new episode of ABC’s hit political drama Scandal. With so many heavy situations at hand, costume designer Lyn Paolo reflected the plotline by using subtle cues when dressing Washington. “We used darker tones in [Olivia’s] costume to reflect the dark undertones of her soon-to-be-made decisions,” Paolo told InStyle.com. Case in point: The outfit shown here, which includes a navy blue Christian Dior satin jacket, pale pink Ferragamo coat, tan Prada purse, and light gray Armani pants. “Olivia is torn, should Fitz give up everything for her, will it work, how can they be together without destroying his Presidency?” added Paolo. We can’t wait to watch what happens as things heat up! Tune in to Scandal tonight at 10 p.m. EST on ABC.

5 Questions for Beth Stern: Host of National Geographic’s New Show, Spoiled Rotten Pets

Apr 20, 2013 @ 4:00 pm
Beth SternTwitter/natgeowild

Are you an animal lover? So is Beth Stern, and she’s taking her undying love for furry (and feathered) friends to the airwaves for all to see. Tonight at 9/8c, the National Geographic Channel premieres Spoiled Rotten Pets, a show about how owners spoil and pamper their little loved ones, and we had a chance to chat with star and host Beth Stern about some of creatures she encountered while filming the first season. Scroll down learn about more about how she delved into the lavish lifestyles of pets—and just who is more cuddly: her own pets or her husband, Howard Stern.

1. This show features owners dressing up pets. What’s the most elaborate outfit you’ve seen?
Beth Stern: “I was able to attend a doggie wedding where the bride wore a custom made gown of taffeta and satin—the quality of the dress was nicer than a lot of the human weddings I’ve been to. Then, there was Sofia the Pomeranian, who at her “barkmitzvah” had a choice of five different white dresses and she chose a white eyelet one. I was laughing because this is ridiculous—but she literally sniffed each dress, walked back and forth and then sat on one. She picked it! She was so good and patient when we put it on her.”

2. Aside from wardrobe envy, what do you hope people take away from the show?
“People who are true animal lovers are going to really relate to it a lot, and they’re going to laugh at some of the extreme measures people go to to spoil their pets. But I think it will probably inspire people to spoil their pets just a little bit more.”

3. For all the pet owners out there, do you have a trick for getting pet hair out of clothes?
“In every single one of my purses, even my little satin clutch and my tiny Chanel bag, I always carry a lint roller. I keep them in every drawer, in every desk and nightstand. I just buy those at the dollar store in bulk. I’m always rolling my husband [Howard Stern], too. He wears all black and our cat Walter is white, so I just take the roller and roll him down.”

4. Do you have rules for your pets?
“No! They can do whatever they want. I have a 22-pound black cat on my desk right now, he’s sleeping and snoring. He’s like an old man on my desk.”

5. Who’s more lovable: Your pets or your husband?
“My husband is a big softy and he is so lovable. He is very much like my pets in that I love to cuddle him. So they’re equal!”

Spoiled Rotten Pets premieres on the National Geographic Channel, Saturday, April 20 at 9/8c.

Hemlock GroveSophie Giraud for Netflix

Can’t decide what to watch in your Netflix queue? Tune in to the network’s new 13-episode murder mystery, Hemlock Grove, which premieres today on the video streaming site. The Gothic horror series takes place in a small Pennsylvania town, and revolves around the brutal murder of a 17-year old girl and the town’s peculiar inhabitants (think werewolves, giants, and other supernatural creatures) who could all be suspects in the case. The show stars Famke Janssen, Dougray Scott, Bill Skarsgard (yes, the younger brother of another supernatural man, Alexander Skarsgard), Landon Liboiron, Penelope Mitchell, and Freya Tingley in a gripping, dreamlike tale that is unlike anything on basic cable. “The first episode is a quick glimpse into the world of Hemlock Grove and its eccentric personalities, both past and present,” Landon Liboiron, who plays the new kid in town (and spoiler alert: potential werewolf!), revealed to InStyle.com. “I don’t think there’s anything you can’t expect to see.” How terrified should we be? “Prepare to be gripped to your seat,” Freya Tingley, who plays a young novelist curious about the town’s happenings, told InStyle.com. “For most people because of the horrifically brutal murder but for others like me, the two half-naked hot boys [Skarsgard and Liboiron] are definitely cause for some serious seat gripping!” Learn five facts you need to know about the show in the gallery, and stream the entire series now on netflix.com.

The third episode of Mad Men season six airs tonight, and with it are sure to come many more amazing pieces of sartorial eye candy! Last week, the Drapers, Olsons, and Holloways made a triumphant return, as we saw Don devolve to his old philandering ways, Betty venture to the East Village in search of a very lost girl, and Peggy take the reigns at her new job. InStyle caught up with Banana Republic creative director Simon Kneen—who co-created a collection with Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant—at the brand’s fall preview in New York, where he ruminated on what he would like to see more of on the show. “Obviously, amazing clothes,” Kneen told InStyle.com. “I hope it gets a little more upbeat, because it was getting darker and darker and darker. But that’s Mad Men, I suppose.” We second that! Tune in to AMC tonight at 10/9c to see all the well-styled drama unfold.
