The Sessions Star Helen Hunt: “It’s A Totally Unique Story”

Oct 19, 2012 @ 4:20 pm
The Sessions FilmEverett Collection (2)

New movie The Sessions is something completely different for actress Helen Hunt for one blaringly obvious reason. “I’m naked five minutes into the movie—that makes it different!” Hunt told InStyle.com at the Toronto International Film Festival recently. The Ben Lewin-directed film, in theaters today, tells the story of Mark, a paralyzed man in an iron lung (played by Oscar nominee John Hawkes) who wants to lose his virginity, while Hunt plays Cheryl, the “sex surrogate” hired to give him his wish. “I told myself to just throw my heart and soul and body into playing this woman who’s actually the embodiment of a positive look at sex, a positive feeling about sex,” Hunt told InStyle.com. “I like the idea of getting to be that.” William H. Macy plays Mark’s priest Father Brendan, who helps him cope with the moral ramifications of paying for Hunt’s services. “We were just weeping like babies when we saw the film because it’s so moving,” Macy told InStyle.com. (Many are saying it’s got award-season potential!) Up for a good cry this weekend? Find out where the film is playing near you.

Smashed in Theaters: Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul on Their Transformations

In Smashed, Mary Elizabeth Winstead puts herself on the map in a breakout role as Kate Hannah, an alcoholic whose relationship is put to the test when she decides to get sober. Aaron Paul, fresh off his Emmy win for Breaking Bad, is equally compelling as her husband, Charlie. “It’s so funny because her and I didn’t know each other before the film and we hung out just a few times before shooting,” Paul told InStyle.com during the Toronto International Film Festival. “She always looks so beautiful and elegant—it’s quite opposite of Kate.” It’s true: Winstead had to transform for her on-screen appearance, with clothing as broken-down as her character. “The wardrobe stands out quite a bit,” said Winstead. “People tend to comment on it after they see the film. [My character] doesn’t really care about what she looks like because all she cares about is drinking and having fun and getting drunk. It was liberating to look that crazy.” Their chemistry helped, too. “It’s very funny at times but also, as a character, she reaches a lot of lows, so there was a lot of dark, gritty stuff to go through,” added Winstead. “It was a great gift to have Aaron on set because he was such a light, happy, loving presence all the time amidst a really dark story.” Break out your tissues for this engrossing, compulsively watchable portrait of addiction that’s as sad as it is beautiful.

Seven Psychopaths Out Today: Colin Farrell’s Co-Star Crushes

Oct 12, 2012 @ 3:14 pm

In the quirky new crime comedy Seven Psychopaths, Colin Farrell plays a struggling screenwriter searching for inspiration who, along with his oddball friends played by Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell, inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld. The film is irreverent fun with a killer cast of screw-loose stars, including Woody Harrelson, Abbie Cornish, and Olga Kurylenko, which made it a hit at the Toronto International Film Festival last month. “I cultivated a rather aggressive crush for Sam Rockwell in really quick time,” Farrell told InStyle.com during the festival. “And I kind of had a crush on Chris Walken all my life. You know, as an actor, one does. He’s just about as particular an actor as I think has ever graced the silver screen.” Their camaraderie made for good scenes on and off screen. “In between takes and really had a few laughs,” said Farrell. “It was tough on our shoot in the desert in the freezing cold in the night and that was tough, but that was a lot of fun.” Visit sevenpyschopaths.com to see where it’s playing in a theater near you.

Argo in Theaters: Check Out the Seventies Styles

Oct 12, 2012 @ 12:41 pm

Ben Affleck solidifies his reputation as a real-deal director with Argo, in theaters today. This smart, well-acted, edge-of-your-seat thriller is about CIA agent Tony Mendez (Affleck) who concocts a crazy plan to free six Americans during the Iranian hostage crisis, with a little help from Hollywood. Scene-stealing turns by John Goodman and Alan Arkin serve as cheeky comic relief to balance out the serious subject matter. The critics are eating it up, and so are we. We caught up with the stars of the film during the Toronto International Film Festival to find out more about the movie—especially those ‘70s-inspired fashions. Found It! Emily Blunt’s Neon Pink Lip

Sep 14, 2012 @ 9:00 am

We loved Emily Blunt’s bright pink lip at the Toronto International Film Festival, and it provided a striking contrast to her white Tory Burch ensemble. To create the high-impact color, her makeup artist Jenn Streicher used the Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Demure. The day-glo magenta is not quite a lipstick and not quite a gloss, but a hybrid of both products that glides on easy with a saturated, velvety finish. A layer of MAC’s Lipglass in Clear gave Blunt’s lips a glossy shine and finished the look. Pick up the Lip Tar for $15 at occmakeup.com, and the gloss for $15 at maccosmetics.com.

Most of the actors who descended upon the Toronto International Film Festival this week have since left, departing for New York, Los Angeles, and beyond. But before they did, they stopped by InStyle’s pop-up portrait studio at the Windsor Arms Hotel to get their photo taken for a future issue, including Saoirse Ronan of Byzantium, Ziyi Zhang of Dangerous Liaisons, and Gael Garcel Bernal of No. “I was here last year, and I loved the festival,” Ronan (in an A.L.C. top and a Rag & Bone jacket) told InStyle.com. “I love it this year, too. I love the people, I love the place.” And it’s Canada! What’s not to love, eh? Stars Are Obsessed With This Tom Ford Dress

Sep 12, 2012 @ 3:53 pm
Tom Ford DressGetty Images (4); Picture Group

This Tom Ford dress is everything. At least if you ask Jennifer Lawrence, Kim Karashian, InStyle cover girl Jennifer Lopez, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Kate Beckinsale, it is! Most recently worn by Smith at the Toronto International Film Festival for the premiere of her movie Free Angela & All Political Prisoners, it was also Lawrence’s choice for the Paris premiere of The Hunger Games in March, J.Lo’s for her birthday celebration in July, Beckinsale’s for Spike TV’s Guys Choice Awards, and Kim K’s for the BET Awards in July. And we totally get why they love it: the open-back zipper detail is classically sexy and the monochromatic palette is awesome for accessorizing. We wish we had one in our closet!
