Does art really imitate life? In Jennifer Lawrence‘s case, yes! Pre-pixie cut, the star famously wore intricate braided hairstyles that mirrored her on-screen plait in her role as Katniss Everdeen, and we were left wanting to recreate each of the delicate looks on our own. The Katniss effect also caught on in Hollywood, with one A-lister after the next hitting the red carpet in a pretty twist that would look right at home among Panem’s avant-garde style choices. To celebrate the release of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, we rounded up our favorite celebrity braids, all of which would do District 12′s boldest resident proud. See each style in our gallery now!
Jennifer Lawrence‘s “victory tour” to promote her latest film of The Hunger Games franchise, Catching Fire, was a series of one fashionable frock after the next. It kicked off with the UK premiere of the film, where our December cover girl debuted her pixie cut, and continued with six additional red carpet premieres where the actress wowed in various looks (many of which were Christian Dior), that ranged from playful in London, to sultry in Paris, and ended with bold in Los Angeles (we’re loving her diamond Ana Khouri hand cuff from the Italy premiere!).
In honor of the film out today, look through our gallery to see more of her looks from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire premieres and be sure to watch the film in theaters nationwide now!
The wait is almost over — Catching Fire rolls out to theaters nationwide tomorrow, with midnight screenings starting in mere hours! But before you line up for tickets, consider accenting your Katniss ensemble with some ultra-hot nail art. We painted up four fun manicures inspired by the film, and while they’re not as intense as Effie’s embellished talons, they’re an easy, stylish way to give your look a touch of fire. See each manicure in our gallery now, with step-by-step instructions on how to nail all four effects.
The Hunger Games’ Costume Designer Trish Summerville Dishes on Dressing the Cast and Shares A Secret About J.Law’s Fall at The OscarsNov 20, 2013 @ 2:47 pm
It’s rare to find fresh-off-the-runway fashion in action-packed films, but, thanks to Trish Summerville, The Hunger Games series plays equally with action and Alexander McQueen. Summerville, who was awarded Costume Designer of the Year at the 2013 Style Awards, has been creating iconic pop culture looks for quite some time, including Christina Aguilera’s leather chaps getup in her Dirty video and Rooney Mara’s eerie-chic style in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The costume designer even told us she crafted the prominent biker jacket Mara rocks throughout the film. Summerville dished to InStyle on how she prepares to costume a blockbuster hit and how Elizabeth Banks morphs into character (above in a red-ruffled McQueen frock). Plus, she shared a tiny little secret on the graceful fall Jennifer Lawrence took in Dior Haute Couture on her way up to the Oscars stage last February.
As much as we love the often-outrageous costumes of the Hunger Games cast, more often than not, the looks don’t exactly translate to the real world. (To get outfitted as Effie Trinket, Elizabeth Banks has said it required a 4 a.m. wake-up call and two-and-a-half hours in the makeup chair every day. Not exactly what we would call a low-maintenance beauty routine.) Still, where there’s a will there’s a way, and so we set out to find some looks from Catching Fire, the series’ second installment hitting theaters this Friday, that we could easily replicate. Click through the gallery to see the outfits we found to fashionably function as styles worn by Katniss, Cinna, and yes, even Effie, no 4 a.m. wake-up call required.
Surprise! Jennifer Lawrence Dons the Same Dior Dress From Her InStyle Photoshoot for a Red Carpet PremiereNov 15, 2013 @ 1:03 pm
It looks like Jennifer Lawrence‘s latest red carpet look may have been inspired by InStyle! Our December cover star stepped out for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire premiere in Italy Thursday night in the same Dior Haute Couture gown she wore in our December issue, on newsstands today. (Check it out on page 440.) For the 13-page spread, InStyle Style Director Melissa Rubini dressed Lawrence in white-hot couture looks from Valentino, Céline, Alexander McQueen, and this gorgeous floor-length Dior silk gown that Lawrence must have loved so much, she wore it twice!
To see Lawrence’s full cover spread and read our exclusive interview with the actress, pick up InStyle‘s December issue, available on newsstands and for digital download now.
In our December cover story, the gorgeous Hunger Games star and Oscar winner opens up to writer Mike Sager about on-set antics, crashing on friends’ couches, and why there’s just no motivating her to diet. But there’s plenty more Lawrence shared with us, including how no one hits on her (say what?!) and her first big splurge (we would’ve opted for a new Céline bag — just sayin’). To read the full interview, be sure to pick up InStyle‘s December issue, available on newsstands and for digital download now.
On being a sex symbol:
“I don’t see, feel or experience any of that. I don’t think about it. And nobody’s hitting on me. And that’s okay. It’s really fine.”
On understanding the male psyche:
“Having brothers turned me into a ‘male sympathist.’ I get where guys are coming from. If a girlfriend says to me, ‘He went to Paris and didn’t call me,’ I’m like, he went to Paris! If it was my brother, I’d tell him not to call, just have fun.”
On being a cheerleader in high school:
“We had a rule in my family that you had to play sports. So for me, cheerleading was a less annoying sport of other options, and in my family it counted as a sport. I ended up doing it for a really long time. It was at a time when I didn’t really like much — sports or school — but in the end, in the realm of what I was doing, I liked it okay.”
On not going to college:
“I was lucky enough to find a job without having to go to college, but I understand that’s usually not the case. It’s interesting to think that if I wasn’t doing what I’m doing, I’d be graduating college about now. In a short amount of time, I’ve lived so much, had so many experiences and met so many different types of people and even lived in so many countries. If I had been in school, I’d be learning about the world from books.”
On her biggest splurge so far:
“I’m saving a lot, but the one thing that was ridiculous but that I could afford, was when I was in Hawaii. I had this coffee that was amazing. It cost like $100 to ship one bag home. I was like, ‘I’m just going to do this,’ and I did.”
This girl is still on fire! At the London premiere of Catching Fire, Jennifer Lawrence gave her new pixie cut a polished touch by sweeping her long fringe to the back, and keeping her sides sleek. It’s certainly a change from the low-key bangs she wore when debuting the cut last week, and the sophisticated look was the perfect complement to her sparkling low-back Dior gown. We couldn’t help but notice that the style mirrored the swept-back updo our cover girl wore for her glamorous December feature, pre-cut, and now we’re wondering: Did Lawrence’s InStyle photo shoot inspire her latest red carpet hair look? We’re not sure, but we love it either way!
