Thandie Newton’s Daughters Inspired Her to Go Natural

Mar 30, 2012 @ 4:15 pm

After chemically straightening her hair for over a decade, Thandie Newton grew out her curls for two very important reasons: daughters Ripley (left), 11 and Nico, 7. “They love their hair,” the Oil of Olay Total Effects spokeswoman told InStyle.com. “Every day it looks different.” Although she has gotten online flack for their natural look, “I want my kids to be free and not be ashamed of any bit of them.” So she makes the grooming process fun. “I love doing their hair, we sit in the bath together and just kind of hang out and chat,” she said. “The key to [handling] curly, knotty hair is to take your time with it.” Certainly, her own gorgeous mane would inspire anyone to let their curls flow! Red-Carpet Trend: Kissed by a Rose

Feb 16, 2011 @ 10:47 am

Everything’s coming up roses on the red carpet. Rihanna performed at the Brit Awards in London last night wearing an ivory and red silk carnation-embroidered gown by Oscar de la Renta, a look from the designer’s spring collection. And she’s not the only one who fell in love with the flower recently. Thandie Newton wore a pink rose-printed Monique Lhuillier gown to the BAFTA Awards over the weekend, and Natalie Portman famously wore a pink Viktor & Rolf gown with a Swarovski-encrusted red rose to the Golden Globes in January. What better time than Valentine’s Day week to see a love-inspired trend on the red carpet?

The secret’s out: Those stars who look like they rolled out of bed (or yoga class) glowing and gorgeous? Not necessarily so. “There’s a relaxed feel to this season’s beauty,” says makeup artist Emma Kotch, who works with Kate Bosworth. “But don’t think it’s easy. It’s actually more challenging because you have to soften everything.” We asked pros (and one of the stars herself) to describe how they create a bare-faced effect (from foundation to mascara) on four actresses with a range of skin tones. Click through our gallery to find out how to achieve the beauty look of summer!

Thandie Newton Channels Cleopatra

Thandie Newton likes playing dress up: First Condoleezza Rice in 2008′s W., now Cleopatra! The British actress took on the iconic Egyptian queen to launch this year’s Virgin Media Shorts competition, which champions undiscovered U.K. film talent. Donning a snake headdress and Cleopatra’s trademark kohl-rimmed eyes, Newton, who will also help judge the contest, paid homage to silent screen star Theda Bera (right), who played Cleopatra in a 1917 film. “We wanted to commemorate one of the early legends like Theda Bara—she was a true, avant-garde screen heroine,” said Newton. “Her spirit and passion is what I’ll be looking for as a judge.” Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London later this year.
