Party planner and wedding designer extraordinaire Colin Cowie came out to support small business entrepreneurs at Martha Stewart’s American Made Awards in New York, but he had a very big project of his own to talk about. In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Cowie created a hot pink chair covered in crystals for Swarovski, and it’s currently being auctioned off on Charitybuzz.com to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. “Breast cancer [awareness] is all about hope,” Cowie told InStyle.com. “And with hope comes the jewels and the gems of life—so we completely pavéd the inside in those trapezoid-shaped diamonds and stones. I think it’s a symbol of glamorous hope.” The luxury lounger is on the block—along with 19 other designer chairs that were designed as part of The Pink Project—through the end of October, with a starting bid of $750. Happy October! Autumn’s first full month is also National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which has focused attention on the disease and helped raise funds to fight it for the past 25 years. It’s a cause that’s close to the heart of the fashion industry, with everyone from Ralph Lauren to Bloomingdale’s creating special products and donating a portion of proceeds to combat the disease. The real star at The Blonds runway show last night in New York was the new Barbie the glamorous designers created (their second!) to support the MAC AIDS Fund. The all-pink doll, which is covered in tiny Swarovski crystals, is being auctioned off on charitybuzz.com through September 25. “She is special because she’s completely covered in Swarovski crystals,” designer David Blond told InStyle.com at the show. “And her shoes have these tiny, tiny crystals pavéd all over them.” Why did the platinum designers decide to collaborate with Mattel on the doll, who also (naturally) comes outfitted with a bright pink fur coat? “Working with Barbie seemed like the perfect partnership because she says, ‘You can be anything you want to be,” David said. David’s design partner Phillipe explained a bit more about the process of dressing the ultimate doll: “She borrowed my heels and my corset and my coat, and she’s looking dazzling as ever.” We agree! Every dress has a story, including the stretch navy dress with Swarovski crystals-studded shoulders that Krysten Ritter wore to DJ at Dentyne’s Split2Fit event last week. “It was custom-made for me,” the actress told InStyle.com. “It’s pretty amazing, and it’s like wearing Spanx!” The body-conscious design is by Chauncy Villeroy, a Los Angeles company so new it hasn’t even put out a collection yet. “We’re so happy that she loves it, it brightened our whole week,” said Alexandria Hardesty, the label’s senior designer. Hardesty first met Ritter as the wardrobe supervisor on Ritter’s film L!fe Happens, and reconnected at a chance meeting in Bed Bath & Beyond. “I was shopping with my mom and ran into her, and she told me she’d love to get a dress,” Hardesty said. She picked out this look for the star, which earned a spot in our coveted Look of the Day section.
