Parisian fashion house Thierry Mugler announced late last night that its artistic director, Nicola Formichetti, is leaving the brand after two years. The label had brought him on to re-energize the brand, and that’s just what he did—pal and styling client Lady Gaga sashayed down the runway for his debut collection and just this year, he teamed up with Shopbop to offer a limited-edition handbag covered in his drawings of panda bears and squiggly monsters. “I was kind of an anti-wearable person before, and now I want my girls to wear things,” Formichetti told InStyle.com at the bag’s launch of his approach to design. We’ll be keeping an eye out for where he heads next—especially in his work with new client Kim Kardashian. Update: Diesel has announced that Formichetti has been tapped as the brand’s new artistic director. “I finally met somebody as crazy as I am,” Renzo Rosso, founder of Diesel, said in a statement. “Nicola shares my vision and I find it incredibly inspiring to work with him: with his help, I want to break more rules and bring the real Diesel to a new generation.” Nicola’s first project: the #DieselReboot initiative, which aims to gather inspiration from young people around the globe. Head to the brand’s Tumblr to check it out.

Kim Kardashian’s Curve-Hugging Maternity Style Explained By Her Stylist, Nicola Formichetti

When Nicola Formichetti first revealed in February that he was styling Kim Kardashian, we were immediately curious how he would dress the pregnant reality star’s famous curves. And we soon received our answer: Never sacrificing her love of fashion, Kardashian has continued to wear the figure-hugging dresses and sky-high heels she loves so well—a head-turning combination for the petite star with a baby on board. That’s why we had to ask the man behind her latest looks—(left to right) a modest black-and-white shift, a leather dress by her sweetheart Kanye West, and two very different Lanvin creations—what he thought of his client’s memorable maternity style. “Kim symbolizes the modern-day girl. She likes very sexy things,” Formichetti told InStyle.com at the February launch of Mugler’s handbag collaboration with Shopbop. “She has a different body structure, [and with her pregnancy], it’s a challenge.” But he added, “She’s not a model, and that excites me!” Tell us: What do you think of Kim’s sexy maternity looks?

Nicola Formichetti Designs Limited-Edition Bag for Shopbop

Feb 6, 2013 @ 4:28 pm

Thierry Mugler artistic director Nicola Formichetti—and stylist to stars like Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashiandesigned a limited-edition of Muglerette bag for shopbop.com, and it’s now available. “I was kind of an anti-wearable person before, and now I want my girls to wear things,” Formichetti told InStyle.com of the bag’s design. “I’ve started really looking at girls again. Not like Gaga and Beyoncé, but real girls.” Formichetti said that the limited-edition bag (only 20 were made!) was inspired by the core DNA of the Mugler brand. “The hardware was inspired from the body armor of the Mugler dresses. So it’s kind of like a mini Mugler museum.” Each graffiti-splattered bag ($1,945) features a slightly different illustration by Nicola, making them all unique. Head to shopbop.com to take a closer look.

Lady Gaga’s Stylist Nicola Formichetti Is Dressing Kim Kardashian Now: Here’s Why He Loves Her So Much

Feb 6, 2013 @ 11:09 am

Lady Gaga’s longtime stylist, Nicola Formichetti, has his hands on a new project—and he’s super excited about it. “I started working with Kim Kardashian recently,” the Thierry Mugler artistic director—who revived the Parisian house in 2010—told InStyle.com at the New York launch of his Muglerette bags for Shopbop.com. “Kanye [West] introduced us. For me, she’s so important. I’m feeling the same excitement I had when I first met Gaga.” Those are big words from the stylist who has honed Gaga’s image from the very beginning, and even had Mother Monster walk in the Mugler runway show in 2011. “I love Kim because she’s really raw. I would love to make her into a modern-day Marilyn Monroe,” Formichetti continued. “She kind of symbolizes the modern-day girl. She has a different body structure, different skin tone, and she likes very sexy things. She’s not a model, and that excites me.” So will we see Kim rocking the avant-garde style Gaga has become so known for? Yes, and she already has thanks to Kanye’s influence. I feel like I can make Kim a little bit more conceptual, but not in a Gaga kind of way,” Formichetti said. “In a year’s time, people will beg for her.” Even while she’s pregnant, Formichetti hopes to craft her maternity style: “So exciting!” he gushed. Big aspirations!

The Best Performance Outfits at the Grammys

Feb 14, 2011 @ 9:39 am

Even if you watched the Grammys on mute, the performance outfits at the ceremony were entertaining enough. “Born This Way” singer Lady Gaga birthed herself on stage, emerging from a womb designed by Hussein Chalayan to perform in a sheer yolk-colored two-piece and matching coat by Mugler (her stylist Nicola Formichetti designs the label, paws up!). The dress Katy Perry wore during her Valentine’s Day-inspired routine had footage from her marriage to Russell Brand playing on it, while British singer Florence Welch belted out an Aretha Franklin tribute wearing Elie Saab. See more of our favorite Grammys performance outfits in the gallery.
