Jessica Chastain’s Vintage YSL Dress: The Behind-the-Scenes Story

Oct 3, 2012 @ 3:32 pm

As the face of Saint Laurent’s new Manifesto fragrance, Jessica Chastain earned herself a front-row seat to the label’s fashion show in Paris this week. What to wear for such an important event? The actress took a page out of YSL history, thanks to a little help from Decades, the Los Angeles luxury vintage boutique, and her stylist, Elizabeth Stewart. “We just ransacked our archives of original Yves Saint Laurents to find the quintessential Parisian look for the show,” Cameron Silver, co-owner and founder of Decades, told InStyle.com. Their pick: A black and white polka-dot Rive Gauche halter dress from the ‘80s. “It created a very modern yet timeless look,” he continued. “Elizabeth did the final fitting right before the show in Paris, since Jessica flew in from New York City where she is in rehearsals for The Heiress. I think my persistent texting may have been slightly distracting to the two of them, but I wanted to make sure we had Jess covered!” And covered she was—her look earned a coveted spot in InStyle’s Look of the Day section.

Jessica Chastain’s Stylist on Her Cannes Fashion: ‘It’s a Science’

May 28, 2012 @ 9:00 am

Stylist Elizabeth Stewart had a big job this week—dressing Jessica Chastain for the Cannes Film Festival. ”We have it down to a science,” the stylist told InStyle.com of the process at the ninth annual PS Arts fundraiser in Beverly Hills this week. “We’ve planned everything out beforehand. It’s like a military operation. We photograph everything. We send a PDF. There’s a printed and e-mailed copy. It’s pretty organized.” As for how she got her hands on so many beautiful gowns—Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander McQueen included—it’s also very methodical. “When you dress a girl like that, you have the world at your fingertips,” said Stewart. “Everybody wants to dress her.” See Stewart’s Cannes fashion show for Jessica Chastain in the gallery.

What’s the secret behind Jessica Chastain’s red-carpet style? Each look is perfectly planned, thanks to her stylist Elizabeth Stewart. “She knows me so well,” Chastain told InStyle.com of her fashion hero, an industry veteran who has also worked with Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence, Freida Pinto, and Amanda Seyfried. “She knows that I love color. I also like things that have an old-fashion vibe to them. I love celebrating a woman’s body and femininity. So she knows what to pull.” Just take a look at some of her vibrant choices above (from left, Viktor & Rolf, Roland Mouret, Balenciaga, and Karen Caldwell), and see more of Chastain’s recent red carpet fashion show in the gallery.
