Tracy Reese Is Designing an Anthropologie Home Line

Feb 11, 2013 @ 3:30 pm

New York designer Tracy Reese (much loved by stars like 90210′s Shenae Grimes) is doing another collaboration with Anthropologie! Following her limited-edition release of the dress inspired by Michelle Obama’s Democratic National Convention look, the designer is working on something new for the retailer—a home collection. “We are launching Plenty Home, which should debut in about a month,” Reese told InStyle.com prior to her runway show during New York Fashion Week. “It was really fun to work on. We had a home license that ended a couple years ago, and I’ve just been dying to kind of get back into it. It’s something that I really love to do.” Keep your eyes peeled for the line’s March release.

Thom Filicia on His American Beauty Interior Design Book and Tina Fey

Interior designer Thom Filicia was never one to mince words on Bravo’s hit series, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, but he’s showing a different side in his just-released interior design book, American Beauty: Renovating and Decorating A Beloved Retreat (Clarkson Potter, $45). The tome uses photography to tell the story of how Filicia discovered a home in serious need of a makeover on Skaneateles Lake in Central New York, where he spent much of his childhood. Filicia bought the house and spent nearly two years doing renovations. We caught up with Thom to hear more about the project and get his interior design advice. “The house was just charming and simple enough that it could have a slightly modern aesthetic,” Filicia told InStyle.com. “It’s on a really beautiful piece of property in a community that is very special to me.” And his own witty tone isn’t the only humor found in the book: Reigning queen of comedy Tina Fey, a long time fan of Thom’s, wrote the foreword. “Tina is a fabulous woman,” Filicia told InStyle.com. “She’s just really cool—very down to earth, relaxed, and smart.” And what about us mere mortals interested in tackling our own interior design project? “Put your stamp on it!” Filicia said. “Make it feel like it is an honest and authentic extension of who you are and what you’re about. Putting that personal stamp on an interior turns a space into a space with a soul.” Buy a copy of his book for yourself and pick up a few as holiday gifts!

Kelly Wearstler Talks New Interior Design Book, Rhapsody

Interior, fashion, and jewelry designer Kelly Wearstler has just released her fourth book of interiors—following tomes Modern Glamour, Domicilium Decoratus, and Hue, Rhapsody showcases Wearstler’s rich breadth of residential creations, divided up by the design elements she loves: metals, raw elements, and architectural form among them. “For this book, I wanted to include a little bit more about my process,” Wearstler told InStyle.com. “A lot of the photographs I took three to four years before [the project was completed], and then you also see them in their finished environment.” And here’s a hint—when flipping through the pages of the book, keep an eye out for sartorial inspirations in the designs. “The interiors are where I created the voice of my work, and it translated into my fashion design,” Wearstler said. She recently did just that, transforming her love for hot pink from interior pieces like the couch pictured above into a leather biker jacket, which made our list of favorite Breast Cancer Awareness products. “I looked at fashion to inspire my interiors, and now I’m looking at interiors to inspire my fashion. I could be looking at jewelry and think this would be a great piece of hardware for a cabinet, or I might see a print in a wallpaper and think this could be a great print for a dress.Rhapsody, published by Rizzoli, is available now for $55 on rizzoliusa.com.

Colin Cowie’s Pink Swarovski Chair for Breast Cancer Awareness: “It’s a Symbol of Glamorous Hope”

Oct 17, 2012 @ 2:59 pm

Party planner and wedding designer extraordinaire Colin Cowie came out to support small business entrepreneurs at Martha Stewart’s American Made Awards in New York, but he had a very big project of his own to talk about. In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Cowie created a hot pink chair covered in crystals for Swarovski, and it’s currently being auctioned off on Charitybuzz.com to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. “Breast cancer [awareness] is all about hope,” Cowie told InStyle.com. “And with hope comes the jewels and the gems of life—so we completely pavéd the inside in those trapezoid-shaped diamonds and stones. I think it’s a symbol of glamorous hope.” The luxury lounger is on the block—along with 19 other designer chairs that were designed as part of The Pink Projectthrough the end of October, with a starting bid of $750. Peek Inside Gwyneth’s Nashville Home

Jun 1, 2010 @ 12:27 pm

Gwyneth Paltrow’s weekly newsletter, Goop, has been dominated of late with tidbits from the star’s time in Nashville, Tennessee, where she shot the upcoming movie Love Don’t Let Me Down. But, as thrilled as we were by the news about her new-found love of fried chicken and honky-tonk, the current edition is even more exciting: It offers a peek into the two-bedroom downtown loft that she lived in with her family while in Nashville. Because the apartment was renovated as a part of the independent film’s limited budget, the tips offered by her Tennessee decorator, Annette Joseph, are surprisingly accessible: She suggests hanging children’s artwork (free and plentiful to any parent), and using bright paint to create a cheap, chic accent wall. Click on to see more of Paltrow’s charmingly Southern home.

Shop Carrie & Big’s Apartment Style

We knew we’d be drooling over Carrie‘s wardrobe in SATC2, but after seeing the film yesterday it’s her and Big’s chic Manhattan apartment that left us filled with style envy. “I’ve been cheating on fashion with furniture,” Carrie says in the film and we think she’s got a keen eye for both! Each room combines Big’s sophisticated tastes with Carrie’s eclectic, color-loving style—the furniture boasts neutral tones and clean lines, while the accent pieces have a one-of-a-kind sensibility. We love the soft gray tufted armchair and florals pillows paired with stripes. Get a similar look with Room & Board’s wingbacked Louis chair, Paul Smith’s Birdie Blossom pillow and Crate & Barrel’s San Miguel pillow. Click on the gallery for more pics of their covetable apartment and tips on how you can get the style!
