Dec 20, 2012 @ 3:05 pm

Letting your shoes make a statement is a cute (and quick!) way to upgrade your look in the new year. The trick to working a graphic heel is to pair it with colorblocked clothing that picks up similar shades. “You’ll get the energy of this season’s the future-is-now patterns in a smaller package,” says Cameron Silver, owner of L.A. boutique, Decades. Tell us: Do you wear bold heels? Let us know by voting in the poll!

Decades Founder Cameron Silver Creates the Ultimate Book for Vintage Lovers

Nov 7, 2012 @ 5:12 pm

After curating the celebrity-loved vintage and consignment boutique Decades in Los Angeles for 15 years now, the store’s co-owner and founder Cameron Silver knows more than a thing or two about shopping vintage—he knows almost everything. And he’s putting all of that expertise into his new book Decades: A Century of Fashion ($60, Bloomsbury Publishing), which explores the history of the genre decade by decade, and the lessons vintage can teach about fashion today. “If your butt and boobs look good, nobody cares if the dress is 10 years old or 100 years old—everybody wants to look sexy,” Silver told InStyle.com of the power of vintage designs. “It’s really just about helping people look beautiful.” To achieve the special sexiness when you shop for vintage, he suggests looking for clothes that still look relevant, not costume-y, despite their age. For the best finds, hit yard sales and flea markets. “Some of the best treasures come when you get out of a metropolitan city,” he advised. “And you might find better buys!” Before your next vintage shopping adventure, check out Decades: A Century of Fashionnow available on amazon.com.

The Fun Story Behind Rachel Zoe and Anne Hathaway’s Vintage Dresses

Jan 26, 2012 @ 5:50 pm

Not only did Anne Hathaway present her stylist pal Rachel Zoe with the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center’s first Visionary Award this weekthe pair also matched in vintage! Christos Garkinos and Cameron Silver, the co-founders of Hollywood designer vintage boutique Decades, dressed them in a down-to-the-very-last-minute styling whirlwind. “I was at Rachel’s house a few days before and she told me she had nothing to wear,” Garkinos—one of Zoe’s longtime pals—told InStyle.com. That’s when he pulled this velvet look, a piece Gianni Versace designed from the ’90s. “She actually turned the dress around so the buttons were in the front, not the back,” he said. “That’s Rachel for you!” Hathaway, however, needed a last-minute option. “She called me two hours before the event,” he said. After trying nine looks, Hathaway went with a black silk chiffon haute couture Christian Dior gown. “I had no idea which one she was going to pick, but when she showed up she looked so amazing.” So, what made these dresses stand out? “The great thing about what we do is that vintage is has a sense of modernity,” he said. “They felt so chic and right on and that’s the true key.” And since they only borrowed the dresses, you can scoop them up yourself by calling Decades at 323-655-0223.

Kristin Davis’s Parade of Vintage Style

Kristin Davis has looked incredible on the red carpet as she promotes SATC2, and it’s not because she’s wearing the hottest runway looks of the season: The actress has chosen at least five different vintage looks from Decades, Inc., a vintage couture boutique. Most recently she debuted a soft yellow Jean Patou Haute Couture dress by Christian Lacroix in Japan, then a gold sequin Norman Norell gown and a green Christian Dior Couture frock for the London fetes. She began her vintage couture parade with a hot pink Jean Desses gown at the N.Y.C. premiere and a glittering Pierre Balmain dress for the after-party. (Fun fact: Every single vintage look was also accessorized with a Judith Leiber clutch.) “Kristin is a good friend. She has a tiny ribcage and even tinier waist–it lends itself to the vintage aesthetic,” Cameron Silver, owner of the famous boutique, told us. As for the most sought-after items at the store, like Dior from the early ’50s and anything Balmain: “It’s first come, first serve–except when it comes to Kristin! She gets first dibs on everything!’
