American Idol is nearing the end! The final four contestants of the season performed last night, with a little mentoring help from Lady Gaga, and we took a closer look at the style of the two leading ladies Lauren Alaina and Haley Reinhart. Each songstress performed two songs, and they played up their personalities with their looks. Reinhart elevated her pop look with a Terani look (left), while Alaina added glam to her country style with a brick red Tony Bowls dress with cheetah-print lining (right). The show’s costume designer Soyon An gave InStyle the inside scoop about the rest of their looks—click “See the Photos” for all the details.

Haley Reinhart and Lauren Alaina are the only two remaining women contestants on American Idol, and they worked their feminine charm with their style during last night’s top 7 episode! We caught up with the show’s costume designer Soyon An for the inside scoop. “Haley, with her tiny frame, looked chic with a ‘50s pin-up inspired dress,” An told InStyle of Reinhart’s red polka dotted frock by Stop Staring ($114 at StopStaring.com). “The tailored look made the dress look sexy and sweet on Haley.” As for Alaina, An gave the contestant the country look she loves. “I wanted Lauren to look young and fun and bring back her sweet country self this week,” An said of the outfit, which consisted of a Guess jacket, Marciano top, Wet Seal skirt and accessories, and Boot Star boots.

Only two ladies remain in the running to become the next American Idol, and they both stepped it up a notch during the Top 8 episode last night! That’s why we scored the inside scoop about their style from the show’s costume designer Soyon An. Haley Reinhart slipped on a colorful dress by Single to sing her version of Blondie’s “Call Me.” “It was so chic and colorful and worked well with her performance,” An said of the frock, which she accessorized with purple thigh-high boots by Chinese Laundry. Meanwhile, An described Lauren Alaina‘s look for her performance of “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus as “sweet young rocker girl.” “The dress flattered Lauren’s figure and the animal print was fun!” She wore a dress from by Beyond by Jovani (style B199; $215 at TheMintCollection.com) and accessories from Bebe and Wet Seal. “Her boots are her own but I added black Swarovski crystals,” An noted of the extra touch. Do you think one of these women will emerge as the leader after last night?
American Idol‘s Top 9 contestants sung their hearts out during last night’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame songs episode! And while only three ladies remain (let’s go, girls!), they scored an awesome treat for the show—getting styled by Gwen Stefani! The No Doubt singer dressed the women in clothes from her L.A.M.B. collection, the show’s costume designer Soyon An said, while all the jewelry was by Noir. “The girls were very excited to meet Gwen,” An told InStyle. “They loved her and thought she was the sweetest.” Pia Toscano wore a printed jumpsuit, Haley Reinhart tried a gray plaid tunic over leather pants, and Lauren Alaina performed in a checked romper and tuxedo-style jacket.
