What It’s Like to Dress Michelle Obama

Apr 14, 2011 @ 1:50 pm

“Many people say that Michelle Obama is a fashion icon, but she’s not—she’s a style icon,” said Kate Betts, author of  Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and the Power of Style, at a New York Public Library lecture about First Lady Style this week. “She’s not necessarily wearing the latest trends walking down the runway. She’s wearing what she wants to wear.” Betts, along with designers Rachel Roy, Sophie Theallet, and Peter Soronen went on to discuss what it’s like to dress the FLOTUS, as all three designers have in the past. Sophie Theallet Designs for Nine West

Feb 1, 2011 @ 2:41 pm

French designer Sophie Theallet teamed up with Nine West to create a line of shoes, bags and jewelry for spring that’s inspired by both her homes—her native Paris and her current city, New York. Each item includes striped fabric (the bags have striped lining), which is her signature, as well as a big spring trend. “I made stripes for the dress Michelle Obama wore, so stripes for me is not a trend, it’s something that’s part of the Sophie Theallet collection,” the designer (inset) told us at a preview of her collection, which she created with Nine West creative director Fred Allard. “It’s great because stripes are what’s going on in fashion—it’s perfect for now. Obama can wear these. Every woman can wear this.” The Sophie Theallet for Nine West collection ranges from $36 to $109, and lands in stores and online this May. See a preview of the collection in the gallery.

Get Michelle Obama’s Summer Style at Gap Prices

Jun 3, 2010 @ 3:20 pm

Love the full-skirted Sophie Theallet dress that Michelle Obama wore to Ghana in 2009 (inset)? A similar design can now be purchased at Gap’s newly-launched N.Y.C. concept store (dedicated to CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winners). For the limited-edition pop-up, which also stocks accessories by Monique Pean and menswear by Patrik Ervell, Theallet created a near-copy of Mrs. Obama’s breezy dress—the color of the skirt’s stripes and the lightweight cotton fabric are among the differences from the original—in both white and black for a more accessible $248.  Fans of Theallet’s feminine touches will also appreciate her other wallet-friendly Gap creations: a summer-ready ruffle-front dress ($248), a tie-front blouse ($148) and a tiered skirt ($198).

Jessica Alba, Zoe Kravitz, Kirsten Dunst and Kerry Washington looked stunning in their one-of-a-kind Gap designs at Monday night’s Met gala, and now the amazing creations are up for auction on Gap.com! Designers Sophie Theallet (whose looks graced Alba and Vera Farmiga), Alexander Wang (who dressed Kravitz and M.I.A.), Rodarte (who outfitted Dunst and Jamie Bochert) and Thakoon (who dressed Washington and Riley Keogh) were commissioned by Gap creative director Patrick Robinson to interpret this year’s Costume Institute theme, “American Woman.” “What’s brilliant about [the collaboration] is that it’s not just about the designer, it’s about the person wearing the gowns,” Robinson told us. “If you look at them all together, it’s a beautiful blend of America.” For Robinson, the auction extends the brand’s approachable take on star style. “It’s important that people can connect with the style and with what being a celeb is like for a moment,” he said. “[The auction] is more of a personal way to experience it.” Gap’s gala gown auction runs from May 5 to May 31.
