2013 clearly saw some amazing footwear, and our favorites each had a special element. The flat was back this year in a major way—thank goodness—and was more stylish than ever! Brogues made their way onto our feet in escalated colors and designs. From companies like AGL and Cole Haan and designer Christian Louboutin, this menswear staple is one we hope sticks around. Another flat that was hot to trot this year? Gucci‘s iconic loafer, featuring a horse bit across the instep, celebrated its 60th anniversary by proving they are here for the long haul. If you’re more of a heels girl, we loved Manolo Blahnik’s made-to-order BB shoes (inspired by Brigitte Bardot) that are available online from Neiman Marcus for $595. Customize by heel height and color for your own perfect pair.
Custom shoe brand Milk & Honey, known for its celebrity-designed charity pumps and one-of-a-kind creations, is on the heels of a new collaboration! Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan, the witty writers and founders of sassyfied style site gofugyourself.com, have partnered with the brand to debut a collection of five shoes—ranging from red and white capped toe oxfords to bow-tipped pumps — that were designed to convey an adult take on “back to school.” With peppy names like “Trixie” and “Blair,” these jewel-tone loafers and round-toe pumps in tweed are a colorful and sophisticated addition to a fall wardrobe. Prices start at $159 and as with all the heel options on custom-shoe site milkandhoneyshoes.com, you can select your preferred height (are you a see-me-roar 5″ plus platform, or more demure 2″?). This isn’t the first time the shoe brand has crossed paths with the entertainment site — last year, the brands collaborated on a snakeskin heel to benefit Breast Cancer Awareness. This time around, proceeds from the sale of each shoe benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

An amazing pair of shoes can be called a work of art, and at BucketFeet they actually are. The company transformed the idea of simple white sneakers into mobile art pieces by allowing various artists to “paint” and design their motifs on them. Buy them, and the story of the artist comes in your package. Colorful, fun and totally perfect for fall — who’s in? Scoop ‘em up starting at $65 at bucketfeet.com.

Come spring 2014, Crocs will launch an upscale line, and they’re pretty cute! Conceived by Crocs designer Stefano Furiani, the new collection includes pumps, spectator flats, mules and ankle-strap thongs, all available in a variety of colors. Retailing for $80 to $120, the shoes will still feature the brand’s signature TPU uppers and Croslite footbeds, which is what makes the originals so comfortable but go beyond weekend wear. During creation, Furiani focused on using mixed materials in unexpected ways, and they certainly are surprising! Tell us, would you wear these upscale Crocs?

Now this is something worth getting up early for! In celebration of InStyle‘s first-ever shoe collection with Nine West—now available in stores and online at ninewest.com/instyle—staffers and editors enjoyed a special 9 a.m. shopping session to score first dibs on the 26-piece collection just before it became available across the country.
