President’s Day Weekend was a busy one for our favorite social media-happy celebs, and the proof was on Instagram, of course. So, what exactly were they up to? Hailee Steinfeld and Sarah Hyland spent the long weekend traveling, while stars including Oprah and Lupita Nyong’o hit the BAFTAs in London. Meanwhile, Lea Michele soaked up the sun on during her warm weather getaway. Check out 9 of our favorite Instagrams from the weekend.
After the 2014 Golden Globes earlier this month and last night’s Grammys, it’s clear which red carpet trends are here to stay. Stars like Miranda Lambert (in a custom Pamella Roland) rose to the top in shades of fiery red while the quintessential color combo, black and white, dominated once again in stand-out prints (see: Paula Patton in Nicolas Jebran).
A handful of A-listers , from Sarah Hyland (in Emilio Pucci) to Sara Bareilles (in Blumarine), eschewed the usual floor-sweeping gowns in favor for shorter lengths, baring legs for days. And let’s not forget about the blinding high-shine metallics that lit up the red carpet, like Taylor Swift‘s metallic chain-mail Gucci design. From high contrast to statement accessories, see which celebrities rocked the five major fashion trends last night.
Although Modern Family star Sarah Hyland tried on several dresses before settling on the Pamella Rolland column she ultimately wore at this year’s SAG Awards, the road to finding “the one” became more complex than the actress initially intended.
“[The dress] was actually a lot shorter,” Hyland tells InStyle.com. “I call these mullet dresses—so the mullet was shorter than this, but I was like, ‘It’s the SAG Awards! I want it to be more fancy,’ so, in 24 hours, they remade this dress,” she said, adding that the dress arrived Saturday morning at 8 a.m. A mullet never looked so good, Sarah!
In case you missed it, the 20th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards aired last night, and social media platforms were abuzz throughout the event as actors honored their peers—especially Instagram! Celebrities took to the photo-sharing site to document the special night starting on the red carpet and continuing through the show. From funny lady Mindy Kaling showing off her dress, to Sarah Hyland‘s pretty mani to Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Modern Family cast photo, relive some of the night’s best moments through the lenses of Hollywood’s smartphones by clicking through the gallery now.
How does Sarah Hyland prep for an awards show? For the 2014 SAG Awards, the star’s hairstylist Ryan Richman and makeup artist Allan Avendano gave InStyle.com a behind-the-scenes look at how her stunning hair and makeup came together. “As a team, we were inspired by classic style icons,” said Richman. The resulting effect was definitely glamorous, but didn’t distract from her hi-low Pamella Roland gown — or those amazing Jimmy Choo heels. From the retro references that inspired the team, to the finished look, get a behind-the-scenes peek at how Hyland got ready for the big event in our gallery!
When we spotted Modern Family star Sarah Hyland on the red carpet this past Sunday, we couldn’t help but notice her glam handbag — why did it look so familiar? It was one of our Independent Handbag Designer Awards winners! Each year InStyle teams up with Handbag Designer 101 for the Independent Handbag Designer Awards, which honor aspiring designers with six awards in handbag excellence. To our excitement, Hyland carried a clutch by one of the 2012 IHDA winners at the annual InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes after party. Hyland’s “Soraya Shimmer” bag, designed by sister duo Bita & Rouzita Vahhabaghai for their line Ita Collection, perfectly complemented her Georges Hobeika gown.
In 2012, Ita Collection won the title of “Best Overall Style and Design” for their mint green nubuck ”Farah” clutch that blends leather with metal into a new, exotic material—which is how each of their unique designs are fabricated. The then-unknown brand is now sold in stores like Saks and Intermix, in part thanks to their IHDA win and feature in InStyle. We were so thrilled to see the IHDA’s come full circle at the 2014 Golden Globes! Snag the bag for yourself at itacollection.com.
