The season finale of Fashion Star aired last night, and Kara Laricks took home the top prize—a $6 million contract with Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, and H&M! “I very specifically remember standing on that stage and thinking nothing but ‘I’m grateful,’” Laricks told InStyle.com exclusively. “It’s been a lifelong dream to be able to create a full collection, and see people shopping it and people loving it.” While the designer showcased collections for all three retailers last night, our top pick is the sleeveless tuxedo shift dress she designed for Macy’s ($79 at macys.com). With its sleek cut and black and white color palette, it’s the perfect canvas for bold accessories. “I want people to be able to celebrate each side of their personality,” Laricks said of her designs. “I design in a way that you can take any piece and determine how you want to style it and make it comfortable for you.” Congratulations, Kara!

Fashion Star Episode 9: See the Winning Looks (And Our Top Pick)

May 9, 2012 @ 12:10 pm

The season finale of NBC’s Fashion Star is almost here! Last night, the mentors and judges had to slash six contestants to the final three. The pressure was on as each designer presented two looks, and H&MMacy’s, and Saks Fifth Avenue all walked away with new designs. But which one did we like most? Our top pick is Orly Shani’s two-tone dress, which was scooped up by Saks  ($295 at saksfifthavenue.com). “The hourglass shape is very flattering for a woman’s body,” said Saks buyer Terron E. Schaefer of why he bid $60,000 on the look. We love how the neutral colors can provide a great backdrop for standout accessories. See the rest of the night’s winners in the gallery, and tune in to see who takes home the top prize during next week’s finale episode.

Fashion Star Episode 8: See the Winning Looks (And Our Top Pick)

May 2, 2012 @ 12:25 pm

The eighth episode of NBC’s Fashion Star aired last night, and H&MMacy’s, and Saks Fifth Avenue all walked away with new designs. But which one did we like most? Our top pick is Luciana Scarabello’s tailored silk tulip hem dress, which was scooped up by Saks. The designer showcased the design in spring-ready floral print ($325 at saksfifthavenue.com) and basic black ($295 at saksfifthavenue.com). We love the look’s cut-away neckline (no need for a necklace!) and waist-defining shirring. See the rest of the night’s winners in the gallery.

Fashion Star Episode 3: See the Winning Looks (And Our Top Pick)

Mar 28, 2012 @ 4:00 pm

Did you watch Fashion Star last night? Of the designs that won bids from H&M, Macy’s, and Saks Fifth Avenue, our favorite was this pair of high-waisted floral shorts by Ross Bennett. The style caused a bit of a bidding war, and Macy’s walked away with the spring-ready design for $120,000. “Love the @TheRBCollection shorts in pink paired with my @JSCollection Fawana Platforms!!” Jessica Simpson tweeted. Shop the look in floral print, pink, and green gingham for $59 at macys.com, and click through the gallery to see all of last night’s winning designs!

Fashion Star Episode 2: See the Winning Looks (And Our Top Pick)

Mar 21, 2012 @ 10:40 am

On the second episode of NBC’s Fashion Star last night, the buyers erupted into a bidding war over Kara Laricks’s tie-back plaid scoopneck dress, and Saks Fifth Avenue won with its $110,000 bid. Though, that’s not the look we loved most. Our favorite was this simple, easy-to-wear pink dress by Lisa Vian Hunter. The style works for day and night, weekend and work (we’d tie the belt in the back and pair it with bright flats). And, at $99, Macy’s priced the versatile design just right. Looks like America agreed—the style sold out in both its pink and pattern versions hours after the show aired. (Note: The Sarah Parrott-designed trousers that H&M bid on also sold out.) See all of the winning looks in the gallery now, and tell us, which design did you like best?

Of the six designs (out of 14 competing designers) that won bids from H&M, Macy’s, and Saks Fifth Avenue, our favorites were these two, shown here. Orly’s transformable skirt is a versatile addition, perfect for young professionals going from day to night ($350), and Sarah’s mini in trendy aqua is a fun update to the standard LBD with a budget-friendly price tag of $19.95. And we’re not alone—of all six winning pieces, these two sold out online within hours after the show aired! Check out all of the winning looks in the gallery now.
