Exclusive: It Took 27 Hours To Dye Rose McGowan’s Hair Blonde

Dec 19, 2012 @ 12:51 pm

Rose McGowan recently went platinum blonde for the first time ever, and to complete her hair makeover, she really needed to commit. “All told, it took about 27 hours,” McGowan told InStyle.com at the Humane Society of the United States’ To The Rescue! New York benefit. “The first day alone was 14 hours,” The dye job was done by celebrity colorist Tracey Cunningham—much loved by stars like Natalie PortmanGwyneth Paltrow, and Drew Barrymore—and was inspired by Michelle Pfeiffer’s iconic locks in Scarface. “I’ve just been in a little bit of a rebellious mood, what can I say?” McGowan said of her decision. ”It was a big transition.” Indeed!

Marisa Tomei, First Lady Michelle ObamaClaire Danes, Scarlett Johansson, and Rose McGowan are gravitating to prints this spring—all from the same British label, Preen. Launched by English duo Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi in 2001, the brand became famous for its sophisticated, cool designs and patterns, as exemplified by the women wearing them above. “Our prints say, ‘I’m modern, I’m sexy, I’m cool,” Thornton told InStyle.com. “We design them to offer women something they may not have worn before, but with this a sense of romance.” Even if you are tentative about the graphic look, Thornton has advice: “Mix them up with solids such as a simple jacket or pencil skirt, and then accessorize with minimal items,” he said. “Don’t be afraid of bold prints they make you look both current and appealing. They say ‘I’m interesting and fun!’” Preen is available starting at $240 at net-a-porter.com.

Rose McGowan Admires Kate Middleton’s Style

Rose McGowan and Kate Middleton have remarkably similar styles, a fact McGowan cherishes. “If it’s good enough for Kate Middleton, it’s good enough for me!” McGowan told us at Entertainment Weekly’s pre-SAG party in Hollywood, where she wore a hot pink Issa gown, a look that Middleton had worn previously in a slightly different cut. And this that wasn’t the first time McGowan and the Princess-to-be shared an Issa look. “I wore [the label’s] bright green gown to the MOCA and then Kate Middleton wore the blue one to announce her engagement to, you know, the Prince.” So why does she love the Kate Middleton-approved label? “Issa really embraces women’s forms,” McGowan told us. But don’t expect McGowan to admit that she and Middleton are exactly the same. “It might be Issa that brought us together,” she said. “But I don’t wear funny hats. And she probably doesn’t wear five-inch heels.”
