We loved Rose Byrne‘s delicate Emilio Pucci dress from the Los Angeles premiere of The Internship—so much that we named her our Look of the Day—and especially how her soft metallic shadow and smoky eyeliner gave the ensemble a sexy edge. “Rose’s dress was so sophisticated yet sweet, so I wanted the makeup to be a little bit on the tougher side,” said her makeup artist Monika Blunder. “My inspiration was a Kate Moss look, a rimmed black eye to create a smudgy, smoldering effect.” Here’s how she created it:
1. BRONZE SHADOW
Blunder used the Chanel Quadra palette in Premier Regard ($59; chanel.com). She swept the bronze shade all over the star’s lids, then blended the dark black shadow onto the outer corners of Byrne’s eyes.
2. ADD SOME LINER
Of course, no Kate Moss look is complete without the model’s trademark liner, so Blunder defined Byrne’s upper and lower lash lines using Chanel’s Waterproof Eyeliner in Black Shimmer ($30 at chanel.com).
3. THE FINISHING TOUCH
She then finished with a generous amount of Le Volume de Chanel Mascara in Noir ($30 each; chanel.com).

Over at the South by Southwest Film and Musical Festival in Austin, Texas, plenty of new movies and tunes are debuting, but one classic trend is holding steady: black and white fashion. Olivia Wilde (in Dolce & Gabbana), Ashley Benson, and Genesis Rodriguez, all on-hand to premiere their latest films, worked the tones in tandem, and they made each lady look cool and confident. It’s a reassuring palette—especially when organized in crisp grids or lines, like Wilde’s Dolce number. But if you try the trend yourself and want to lessen the impact, add another color, like Rose Byrne, who paired her pinstriped A-line skirt and white accessories with a peach Balenciaga button-down blouse. (Tip: You can also add color with a bright pump or bold lips.) But remember, you don’t need much makeup—just filled brows and contoured cheeks; let your sharp outfit take center stage.

Rose Byrne loved the Valentino gown she wore to last night’s SAG Awards, but had only one qualm about the look: “I think I’m the only one in bright colors!” she told InStyle.com. “It’s weird. Everybody is in simple colors in monochrome colors. I didn’t realize I would feel like such a fish out of water, but whatever!” And we like her carefree attitude (own it, Ms. Byrne!). “It was very me and I put it on and instantly, I just loved it,” she said of how she picked the multi-hued design, which she accessorized with Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry. “It’s really, really fitted.“

Our favorite looks this week—plucked from our Look of the Day section—happened to represent two of spring’s biggest trends: black and white, and shades of red. Jennifer Lopez was white hot in Lanvin, Miranda Kerr stepped out with a leather Givenchy tote and buckled Barbara Bui booties, Michelle Obama took the Inaugural Ball stage in red Jason Wu, Diane Kruger wore Chanel to the label’s haute couture show, and Rose Byrne wore a draped Balenciaga dress in her namesake color. So who do you think dressed best? Vote in the poll below! More
Rose Byrne’s long bob and chin-skimming crops continue to give us hair envy, and our readers agree! Over 13,000 of you tried on her range of styles in our Hollywood Makeover Tool this week. So, what’s her secret? “My secret is Harry Josh! He’s been my hairdresser for years, and is a very dear friend of mine,” Byrne told us at the grand reopening of Sephora’s Times Square location in New York City. “My hair is actually quite difficult—it’s thick and coarse, and somehow he tames it.” Luckily, you don’t need to book an appointment with the star’s hairstylist to see yourself in her signature looks. Simply head over to our Hollywood Makeover Tool and upload your picture to sample Byrne’s hairstyles. You can even print out a version for your most-trusted hairstylist if you’re considering making the cut as well. Click the link below to start!
