Our favorite looks this week—plucked from our Look of the Day section—were all about intricate floral detailing and classic silhouettes. Marion Cotillard wore a navy and white Dior Haute Couture design to the SAG Awards, Emmy Rossum prepared for a Conan visit in a slim Stop Staring by Alicia Estrada sheath, Cate Blanchett was red hot in a red sequin Armani Privé gown, Kate Mara wore silver and black floral lace Dolce & Gabbana design, and Rooney Mara looked sweet a floral embroidered Alexander McQueen dress in lovely light mint. Sisters who shop together make for a stylish pair! Proof: Rooney and Kate Mara, who both looked gorgeous at last night’s Side Effects premiere in their monochrome frocks (Rooney’s McQueen was our “Look of the Day” pick) and Nicholas Kirkwood heels. Both Mara ladies chose a style from the pre-spring 2013 collection of British designer’s award-winning brand—he just picked up the grand prize from the British Fashion Council’s Fashion Fund. While Kate chose black suede pumps with a swirling design ($895 at modaoperandi.com), Rooney went for ballet pink patent slingbacks ($895 at Nicholas Kirkwood stores). We hope they share with each other!

Catherine-Zeta Jones and Rooney Mara looked ultra-glamorous wearing Michael Kors and Alexander McQueen, respectively, at last night’s New York premiere of their thriller Side Effects, hosted by The Cinema Society and Michael Kors. But for their roles in the movie—in which Mara plays a severely depressed woman with a secret and Zeta-Jones her former psychiatrist—their wardrobe took a more disturbed turn. “When I’m feeling sad or lazy, it’s hard for me to get dressed. You just want to be comfortable,” Mara told InStyle.com on the red carpet. “Me and [costume designer] Susan Lyell talked a lot about wanting [my character Emily] to be in comfortable, loose clothes. That was really important.” Zeta-Jones had a different approach. “It was a fine line, because I play a psychiatrist and am a woman,” Zeta-Jones said. “Obviously there’s a danger and a sexiness to my character. So we didn’t want to push it too much. I wanted to have some sexiness to her, but keep it in the realm of a doctor.” Wardrobe really does inform a character! The edge-of-your-seat film opens nationwide February 8.

Kate Mara (in Dolce & Gabbana) had a very special guest at last night’s New York premiere of the new Netflix series House of Cards—younger sister Rooney (in Band of Outsiders). The political thriller, which will be watchable exclusively on the video streaming site Netflix.com starting February 1, stars Kevin Spacey as the U.S. majority whip, who betrays everyone around him on his climb to the nation’s #1 office.
