Get the Look: Step-by-Step Instructions for Recreating Olivia Wilde’s Burgundy Smoky Eye

Mar 12, 2013 @ 4:13 pm

Not only did Olivia Wilde‘s Gucci number from the Los Angeles premiere of The Incredible Burt Wonderstone win our Look of the Day, but her smoldering purple shadow is giving us serious makeup inspiration, which is why we chatted with her makeup artist Melanie Inglessis to get all the details. “We decided to do something a little edgy to make the look more rock and roll,” she told InStyle.com. “I saw a lot of metallic burgundy makeup on the runway, so we added that color to keep her makeup current.” Inglessis smoothed on a primer to start, then traced Wilde’s top and bottom lash lines with Revlon‘s ColorStay Eyeliner in Black ($7; ulta.com). She followed with the Smoky Shadow Stick in Torch ($9; ulta.com), using the darker hue to fill in the star’s lids. Picking up the deep burgundy from Revlon’s Eye Shadow Quad in Precocious ($8; ulta.com), she blended the color on top of the cream shadow, and into Wilde’s crease. “Keep your makeup below your lid,” Inglessis added. “Don’t take the smoky eye all the way to your brow bone or too far out—just define the natural shape of your eye.”

Olivia Wilde Never Wants to Reapply Lipstick; Revlon’s New Colors to the Rescue!

Feb 28, 2013 @ 11:42 am

Olivia Wilde went incognito for her latest turn as Revlon’s spokesperson, and she shared this exclusive behind-the-scenes video of her new commercial to give InStyle.com readers a first look! In the clip, she shows off platinum strands (hair makeover alert!) and a rich berry lip, courtesy of the brand’s ColorStay Ultimate Suede Lipstick. “I’m definitely not the type of girl who wants to reapply her makeup throughout the day, particularly not lipstick,” Wilde said. “We’re kind of offering up the idea of women daring to leave their lipstick at home, and instead, going out and doing what they need to do while still looking fabulous!” The new Ultimate Suede formulas come in 20 versatile shades, from Wilde’s deep wine to pale neutrals, and are infused with a hydrating mix of shea butter and aloe to keep your lips from feeling parched. Pick up a tube for just $9 at target.com.

Emma Stone’s Gangster Squad Premiere Makeup: Get the Look

Jan 8, 2013 @ 3:11 pm

For last night’s Gangster Squad premiere in Los Angeles, Emma Stone’s makeup artist Rachel Goodwin looked to vintage sirens for the inspiration behind the actress’s jewel-toned smoky eye and sheer lip. “Her dress and statement necklace channeled the late ’70s and early ’80s when women were unabashedly okay with lots of jewelry and makeup,” she told InStyle.com. “We looked to Dynasty’s Crystal Carrington and Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface—two really sexy women of that era who were unapologetic with hair, makeup, and clothes.” To start, Goodwin used Revlon’s eyeliner in Sueded Brown ($10; drugstore.com) all over Stone’s lids as a base, then blended the rich emerald green from the Primer + Shadow Palette in Pop Art ($10; revlon.com) on top. Rather than a pale lip, she finished Stone’s makeup with an airy gloss. “A nude lip just didn’t seem right and felt too done,’” said Goodwin, who used Revlon’s Just Bitten Stain in Rendezvous ($9; drugstore.com). Beautiful!

Fun Fact: Olivia Wilde Colored Her Own Hair With a $6 Box of Dye

Jan 4, 2013 @ 5:53 pm

Olivia Wilde can add the title of hairstylist to her already-impressive resume! In October, the star shifted from her ombre highlights to a deep brunette hue, and it turns out, the change was a DIY job. The star darkened her strands for a role using Revlon’s Colorsilk Buttercream hair color in Medium Brown, and loved her new hue so much, she kept it for the product’s campaign commercial, the beauty brand told InStyle.com. Her Revlon pick is the company’s latest version of dye, which is available in 13 shades and uses a trinity of mango, shea, and coconut butters to condition your hair so it’s not brittle. It’s also laced with the brand’s patented UV absorber to keep your hue from fading. Pick up a box for $6 at revlon.com or at drugstores nationwide.

Olivia Wilde Gives Boyfriend Jason Sudeikis a Lesson in Lipstick

Nov 6, 2012 @ 3:53 pm

Olivia Wilde faces a problem so many women do—to kiss or not to kiss with lipstick on? As the face of Revlon, sacrificing pretty lip colors for first base with boyfriend Jason Sudeikis doesn’t come easy. “Revlon makes these crayons, they’re great and they stay on all day,” the actress told InStyle.com at last night’s Accessories Council Excellence Awards Gala in New York City, referring to Revlon’s Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain (shop it for $9 at drugstores). “I tend to wear this light pink one and my boyfriend avoids kissing me when I’m wearing it because it inevitably gives him a pink upper lip,” she joked. “But the color really sticks. Some colors only last 15 minutes and you’re done, but with these crayons, it lasts. It’s great.” So, save your kisses, Jason!

Halle Berry’s Smoky Eye How-To: Try It This Weekend!

Oct 27, 2012 @ 2:00 pm

Going out this weekend? Whether or not you’ll be in costume, InStyle November cover star Halle Berry’s smoldering silver eye makes for the perfect accent to any ensemble. We love how the star’s version embodies all the classic elements of a sexy smoky eye, but gets an update with a touch of pewter. “To keep the feeling strong on Halle’s modern, yet romantic Dolce & Gabbana lace dress [which the actress wore to her Cloud Atlas premiere], I created an eye look with blended charcoals and shimmery silvers to complement the silver colors in the dress,” said her makeup artist, Kara Yoshimoto Bua, who used a combination of Revlon’s Eye Shadow Palette in Siren ($8 at revlon.com) and the Creme Gel Liner in Charcoal ($9 at revlon.com) to create the look. Ensure that your smoky eye lasts all night by using the cream liner all over your lids as an eye shadow base, then layer the powder eye shadows on top. The smooth base keeps shadow from sliding around, allowing you to spend less time touching up, and more time enjoying the party.

MTV Movie Awards 2012: Emma Stone’s Beauty Breakdown

Jun 4, 2012 @ 7:00 pm

Emma Stone said she picks her makeup looksfrom whatever it is I’m wearing” and last night she paired her black-and-white ensemble with a fresh-faced glow and sexy, tousled updo to accept the first-ever Trailblazer honor at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards. “We wanted her look to be fun and flirty, like she’s been on summer vacation for a while,” her makeup artist Rachel Goodwin told InStyle.com exclusively. “So, I really focused on her skin and then added a great pop of color with the coral lip.” Goodwin also noted the mood was lively and fun before the show, as they prepped jamming to The Beatles and Florence and The Machine. “We’re a really tight-knit group and it has been that way for a long time so these are moments that we definitely enjoy,” said Goodwin. “It’s a great collaborative effort. It shows on Emma—she feels great and knows we all care so much.” Get the full beauty breakdown in the gallery.
