Country crooner Kenny Chesney not only sings about the good life, he drinks to it also thanks to his newly-launched line of rum, Blue Chair Bay. Inspired by easy island living, these beach-flavored drinks — in Coconut, White and Coconut Spiced — are sure to transport you straight to the shore. But before you pull up a beach chair and start mixing a Piña Colada, why not try a drink concocted exclusively for InStyle? Blue Chair Bay’s master mixologist Jonathan Pogash blended pomegranate flavors, lime juice and a dash of champagne for the “Always InStyle” cocktail in InStyle’s signature red hue. Heading to a Fourth of July bash this week? No need to go empty-handed with these fun and festive foods and hostess gifts. From a pastry chef-caliber nine-layer rainbow cake to quick-and-easy watermelon stars, we’ve got a recipe for every party—or equally fun home accents (patriotic champagne, anyone?) to thank your host. Bonus: Should you be hosting a get-together and fall into the “ultimate procrastinator” category, we’ve got plenty of party-decor ideas, too. Click to get a dose of inspiration.
The upcoming 4th of July holiday will be extra sweet for many this year, following yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling overturning California’s previous ban on same-sex marriages and declaring that the Defense of Marriage Act violates the Constitution. Whether you’re throwing a bash to celebrate equality or just feeling a little extra proud of our balanced government, this ombre layer cake from the July InStyle is sure to impress. Don’t be intimidated by the 11-inch height or the graduation in color, it’s actually very easy to create. For starters, take the speedy route by using a cake mix, and swap your liquid food coloring for gel versions for a richer hue payoff. (The same technique will work for a brighter, more rainbow-like effect — if you prefer a more bold treat.) “I also like to frost three layers at a time, then refrigerate them for 30 minutes before doing the next three,” said Sarah Jones of Brit.co, who created the dessert. “That way, the layers stay condensed and don’t wobble.”

If you’re throwing an Oscars viewing party tomorrow, consider this for your spread: an Academy Awards-inspired cupcake! Our favorite bakeries around the country are just as excited as we are for the biggest red carpet of the year, so they whipped up these Hollywood-inspired treats for the occasion. Magnolia Bakery created a decadent red velvet “Red Carpet Cupcake” (right) with cream cheese frosting dusted in gold ($3.50 each at all locations). Sprinkles Cupcakes thought of the nominees for their star-topped treats (center), also with a red velvet cake ($3.50 at all locations). And national chain Crumbs looked to the man of the night, Oscar himself, for their chocolate-iced “And the winner is…” cupcake (left) with a statuette cookie popped right in its middle ($4.50 at all locations). Delicious—and so on-theme! And they’ll only be in their shops until tomorrow, so get snacking!
