App to Try: Nike’s PhotoiD Customizes Sneakers Based on Your Instagram Photos

Apr 23, 2013 @ 5:30 pm

Nike iD, the shoe brand’s customization arm, has introduced the ultimate in fashion-meets-technology: an app called Nike PhotoiD that designs sneakers in custom colorways inspired by the hues found in your Instagram photos. Here at InStyle.com, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to sneaker-fy some of our own shots, like this photo we snapped at the Oscars. Head over to photoid.nike.com to upload your own Instagram photo, choose a shoe (from the Air Max 1, 90, and 95), watch the color machine pick up the prominent tones in your shot, choose from four options, and if you love it enough, purchase your very own pair for $135. It’s so fun, we didn’t stop with one! Click through to see four more Nike-fied InStyle Instagram sneakers. More

Isn’t It Nice to Be Beyonce: See the Singer’s $5,500 Custom Sneaker Wedges

Mar 21, 2013 @ 2:35 pm

PMK Customs considers itself the “Maybach” of the couture sneaker world, which is why when Jay-Z and Beyonce wanted their kicks customized, they turned to founder Andre Scott. The brand crafted Jay’s red Nike-striped “Brooklyn Zoo” Jordans out of a hybrid of luxury reptile skins ($2,500), and Queen Bey liked them so much, she asked the designer to put a fresh twist on her Isabel Marant wedges, too. That’s how her creamy “King Bey” shoes came to be, an ostrich/crocodile/anaconda mix stitched together with gold thread ($5,500). “[The customization] mimics the southern belle’s sweet and fierce persona,” Scott told InStyle.com. “They are two very humble and inspirational people, and to have them part of our network is a true blessing.” Especially when the customers are so impressed by extreme attention to detail—Johnson said he had no edits to the specialized pieces. Check out more of PMK’s custom works at pmkcutoms.com and follow their Twitter @pmkcustoms.

When Gwyneth Paltrow launched her holiday gift guide on GOOP, one of her top picks was this customized Louis Vuitton Mon Monogram Pegase bag. Turns out, customizing your own products is a hot trend. “Personally I just love wearing something that is exactly what I wanted it to be,” Jodie Fox, co-founder and director of fashion of Shoes of Prey, the company that let’s you customize your own shoes, told InStyle.com. “And, it’s also incredibly exciting to respond to a compliment on my shoes by saying, ‘I designed them.’” Since the site went live in October 2009, sales have doubled every quarter and the company has already expanded from Australia to China, Russia and the United States.
