Rainy Day Hairstyle Idea: Rachel McAdams’s Top Knot

Apr 11, 2013 @ 11:45 am

As the saying goes, April showers bring May flowers, but until then, we’re stuck with the challenge of keeping our blowouts intact through the storm. An easy alternative? The high bun Rachel McAdams wore at the Los Angeles premiere of To The Wonder. ”I love a top knot and I am so happy this trend is sticking around,” her hairstylist Mark Townsend said. “They are young, cool, and super-modern.” To create the updo, Townsend began by spritzing Dove’s Refresh + Care Dry Shampoo ($5; drugstore.com) onto dry hair, concentrating application at the roots. After working a dime-sized amount of Dove’s Color Care Leave-On Conditioner ($6; drugstore.com) through the star’s strands, he created a ponytail that sat just in front of the crown. He then twisted McAdams’s hair around the base of the ponytail to form the bun, and anchored it with bobby pins. “I always make an X with two bobby pins when securing, and I always spray dry shampoo on them for extra security,” Townsend added. To finish, he added a strip of black satin as a headband.

The New Redheads of Hollywood: Rachel McAdams, Dianna Agron, Elizabeth Olsen, and Coco Rocha

Hollywood is seeing red! Last week, Dianna Agron and Rachel McAdams both surprised all of us by taking their blonde strands to a bold crimson, and now, Elizabeth Olsen, and Coco Rocha are the latest celebrities to give their hair an auburn tint. While Rocha went the fire-engine route, Olsen’s change was much more subtle, adding a hint of red to her brunette shade. Considering the red route? Joel Warren of Warren-Tricomi Salons notes that the color is more high-maintenance, but the bold statement it makes is worth it. “Red hair has the largest molecule and is difficult to enter into the shaft of your hair,” Warren told us. “To make it last, you need products that help close the cuticle. Try L’Oreal Professionel’s INOA salon service, which doesn’t have ammonia and won’t open the hair cuticle.” Additionally, add more color-preserving products into your hair routine, and steer clear of shampoos that contain sulfates, which can strip hair color. “A strawberry blonde on a blonde base will last much longer than a rich auburn on that same base color,” he added.

Hair Makeovers: Rachel McAdams Is Now a Redhead!

Apr 5, 2013 @ 1:04 pm

Red hair is definitely having a moment! On the heels of Dianna Agron‘s shade-swap, Rachel McAdams is the latest star to jump on the crimson hair bandwagon. McAdams’s strands are just as versatile as her many acting roles, but from her blonde Regina George highlights to her Wedding Crashers brunette, auburn hair holds a special place in the star’s heart. “Being a redhead was unique—I felt very Southern,” she told InStyle previously. “I really enjoyed that!” We’re glad she decided to revisit the look! What do you think of Rachel’s new hair? Tell us in the comments!

While Elie Saab is gearing up for his fashion show in Paris later this month, he seems to already be putting on one at the Toronto International Film Festival. His track record this week is more massive than some labels have all year, with the Lebanese designer dressing some of the biggest names in town. Anna Kendrick chose a onyx lace-sleeve design for the End of Watch premiere; Naomi Watts picked a lavender gown with a plunging neckline for The Impossible premiere; Keira Knightley slipped into a black couture lace gown for her Anna Karenina premiere; and Nina Dobrev of The Perks of Being a Wallflower pulled three looks by Saab, including this red cap-sleeve peplum design for the Argo premiere. “I love this color,” she told InStyle.com of why she picked the look at the Grey Goose-hosted after-party, held at the Soho House. Rachel McAdams of To the Wonder, Jennifer Lawrence of Silver Linings Playbook, and Liana Liberato of Writers also hopped on the Elie Saab bandwagon. This is a fashion show, alright—Toronto style!

How to Protect Your Blond Hair from Chlorine

Jun 10, 2012 @ 1:00 pm

Afraid chlorine will change your bottle blond color? Protect it! “If you jump into the pool with dry hair, it will absorb chlorinated water through and through, and the same goes for salt water,” said Kristen Ess, who works with Rachel McAdams. “Hit the pool or beach with damp, conditioned strands straight from the shower to keep the harsh chemicals from penetrating too far into your hair. You can even leave a little conditioner in your ends to put up an extra barrier.” If you don’t have time to smooth on the conditioner, Ess recommends throwing a bottle of Healthy Sexy Hair Leave-In Conditioner ($10; sexyhair.com for locations) in your beach bag to spritz on before diving in.
