Watch This: Keira Knightley Plays Coco Chanel in New Short Film

May 1, 2013 @ 8:45 am

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first-ever Chanel boutique, Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld cast Keira Knightley to play Coco Chanel in his new short film to mark the milestone, and the trailer alone is already serving up major style inspiration! The film is aptly-named Once Upon A Time… and tells the story of the designer’s first outpost in Deauville, France. Knightley has been the face of Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle fragrance for years and regularly showcases the label’s designs on the red carpet, so it’s a fitting tribute to the fashion icon. Once Upon A Time… will debut in Singapore on May 8, a night before the label’s Cruise Collection shows, but you can watch it online that same day on chanel-news.com. Get a sneak peek now by watching the trailer above.

After much ado about something, Joe Wright’s theatrical recreation of Leo Tolstoy’s classic Russian novel, Anna Karenina, opens in theaters nationwide today. Keira Knightley stars as the titular character, who descends from the heights of aristocratic society to the depths of madness after one lust-fueled decision changes her life—and she does it all while looking incredible in post-war-inspired 19th-century looks created by Oscar-nominated costume designer Jacqueline Durran. InStyle.com got the scoop on the cinematic creations. Click through the gallery to get all the costume details straight from Durran!

Anna Karenina Costumes: “It’s About Her Moving Between Triumph and Humiliation”

Nov 15, 2012 @ 4:29 pm

At a recent advanced screening of Anna Karenina—the film opens in theaters nationwide tomorrow, November 16—there was one thing we immediately noticed about the beautiful Jacqueline Durran-designed costumes: Star Keira Knightley wears mirror-image dresses from the beginning of the film to the end—in other words, the same structures, but in different colors. Durran told InStyle.com that she used this device to illustrate how the titular character moves from the heights of society to (spoiler alert!) being a complete outcast. “With the ballgown near the beginning of the film, she [Anna Karenina] triumphs in a black dress amidst all the dancers at the ball, who are in pastels. For her to be in black makes sense—she was then contrasted to the society around her,” Durran told InStyle.com. “And when she goes back to the opera at the end, it is almost the exact same dress, but in white, and it’s the opposite thing that’s happening. That’s the high point of her humiliation.” Durran, nominated for two Oscars for her costume work on Atonement and Pride and Prejudice (both starring Knightley), also enjoyed the surprise element of dressing Anna in black first, and then white. “You would imagine her in white first and black second, so the fact that it was reversed—I love that,” she said. Click here to find out where the film is playing near you, and stay tuned to InStyle.com for more costume details from Durran tomorrow!
