Craving Some Oz-Like Emerald Jewelry? Our Picks Starting at $20 (No Magic Required)

Mar 8, 2013 @ 4:37 pm

Of all the seriously fabulous costumes in Oz the Great and Powerful (and there are plenty) there is one piece that we couldn’t peel our eyes away from: Evanora’s emerald necklace. Rachel Weisz, the woman behind the witch, does a fabulous job of representing Pantone’s color of the year with her bauble, and we loved it so much, we found four similar pieces you can wear well after the film’s magic has worn off. Click through the gallery to see our picks.

There is no accessory more important in the classic Wizard of Oz fairytale than the click-your-heels-together-and-pray-for-home ruby slippers. And since Judy Garland’s 1939 originals are currently in the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Beverly Hills (thanks to some help from Leonardo DiCaprio), we asked our March cover girls—Oz the Great and Powerful stars Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, and Michelle Williams—for their 21st-century updates. Their picks:

MILA KUNIS
Pick: Chanel’s Ankle-Strap Pumps
Why: “Such a classy look! What really appeals to me is that they’d be equally gorgeous with jeans or something dressier.”
Where: $1,350; at select Chanel boutiques; visit chanel.com for locations.

MICHELLE WILLIAMS
Pick: Charlotte Olympia’s Clio Leopard Heels
Why: “The heels on this pair make me feel teetery-tottery—in a good way, like I’ve had a glass of Champagne!”
Where: $1,095; call 212-744-1842 or visit modaoperandi.com.

RACHEL WEISZ
Pick: Rag & Bone’s Classic Newbury Boot
Why: “I love Rag & Bone. Their stuff has a bit of edge but is also refined.”
Where: $495; at rag-bone.com.

Oz the Great and Powerful Opens Today: James Franco’s Surprising Favorite Character, Plus the Sequel That’s Coming!

Mar 8, 2013 @ 12:25 pm

James Franco stars as the titular Oz in Oz the Great in Powerful, in theaters today. And while we think it’s a lucky gig, considering that his leading ladies include InStyle‘s March cover girls, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis, and Rachel Weisz, we were surprised to learn that it was another character from the Wonderful original that sparked his interest in the series (yep, series—Disney just announced that there would be a sequel). “Looking back, I would say, if I identified with anyone, it would have been the Scarecrow,” Franco told InStyle.com at the Cinema Society screening of Oz earlier this week, just a few days before receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “I was a huge fan of Oz when I was a boy and read all the books.” Even more than the iconic set of characters the novels were known for, though, Franco loved the fantasy element of the film. “It was more about how I was transported to fantastical land, that was the main attraction for me.” A fun reason, indeed! Visit disney.go.com to find out where Oz is playing near you.

Emmy Rossum’s Dorothy-Inspired Outfit for the Oz Premiere

Mar 6, 2013 @ 1:15 pm

Emmy Rossum stepped into the wonderful world of Oz at last night’s screening of Oz the Great and Powerful in New York, hosted by Gucci and The Cinema Society, by wearing a look inspired by the story’s heroine, Dorothy. “It’s Oscar de la Renta,” she said of her silk dress, an aquamarine design embroidered with three-dimensional flowers. “I would say it’s a little Oz-inspired.” She chose it after looking at the designer’s pre-fall 2013 collection online—she famously styles herself, handpicks her outfits, and emails designers—and pulled the look straight from the runway (“I loved it!” she added). She topped it off with ODLR’s ivy and aqua satin pumps—though, we think red sparkly shoes would have also been a fitting option.
