Les Miserables Eponine Stunner: Who Is Samantha Barks?

Dec 26, 2012 @ 12:10 pm

Les Miserables sold $18 million worth of tickets on opening day yesterday, and there was a resounding “Who is that girl?!” across the country when Eponine belted out the tearjerker “On My Own” after realizing Marius (Eddie Redmayne) will never love her the way he loves Cosette (Amanda Seyfried). Stripped from her Les Mis dirt-covered wardrobe, that girl is the gorgeous Samantha Barks, a 22-year-old actress and singer from the Isle of Man (an island between England and Scotland). Barks first gained fame in 2008 when she placed third on the BBC talent competition show, I’d Do Anything, which searched for the lead character in the revival for Oliver! in London’s West End. Despite her loss, the actress went on to become a theater star: In 2010, she landed on West End to play Eponine in Les Miserables, where she perfected the role, and, fun fact, she performed alongside Nick Jonas when he starred as Marius. Now, aside from being a scene-stealer for the same role on film—in her first movie casting ever, no less!—she stars in the UK Disney Channel series Groove High and is touring with the company of Oliver! through February 2013. Click through the gallery to see her off-stage and off-screen style, from Emilio Pucci to Stella McCartney. No doubt, Samantha Barks is a star on the rise.

Les Miserables Star Eddie Redmayne on Being Marius, Singing With Hugh, and More!

Dec 26, 2012 @ 11:30 am
Eddie RedmayneDoug Inglish

He started singing in public at Eton College—a British boarding school where he was classmates with Prince William—as a choirboy. Now as student rebel Marius Pontmercy in the new film adaptation of the classic musical Les Misérables, Eddie Redmayne is hitting his notes alongside Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, and Amanda Seyfried. “During rehearsal, these two titans with brilliant voices, Hugh and Russell, are singing,” the 30-year-old told us. “And it’s like a shiver on the back of your neck.” Funny—that’s just how we feel whenever we see this Brit on the big screen. Les Miserables: Amanda Seyfriend on Being Cast as Cosette

After months of anticipation, Les Miserables is finally in theaters today! The Broadway-to-film adaptation stars Anne Hathaway as Fantine, Hugh Jackman as Jaen Valjean, Eddie Redmayne as Marius, and InStyle cover girl Amanda Seyfried as Cosette, all tragic characters trying to navigate their way through pitiful existences during the French Revolution. “The moment I auditioned for [director Tom Hooper], everything changed,” Seyfried told InStyle. “He gunned for me. What’s most important to him is an actor who can get it and who can be grounded enough to make it believable when she bursts into song.” And she is! The few clips that came out a couple weeks ago reveal in more detail that all the songs are sung live, not recorded post-filming, which is one of the movie’s biggest selling points. It should be an entertaining time at the movies this Christmas Day! Click here to see where the film is playing near you.

Found It! Anne Hathaway’s Deep Wine Lipstick

Dec 12, 2012 @ 1:50 pm

A deep bordeaux lip like Anne Hathaway’s makes a trendy statement, but finding your perfect wine hue can sometimes be a challenge. That’s why Hathaway’s makeup artist Kate Lee mixed three different shades to create a custom color that looked just right. “We wanted Anne to look slick and chic in her home town of New York City,” Lee said of the makeup look Hathaway wore the New York premiere of Les Miserables. “I started out with Chanel’s Rouge Allure Intense Lip Color in Rouge Noir, a deep plum. I then added the raspberry-toned Rouge Allure Velvet Matte Lip Colour in La Somptuese.” A touch of Chanel’s shiny magenta lipstick in Palpitane brightened the dark aubergine base, and made it less severe. Pick up each of the colors, priced from $33 to $34 each, at chanel.com.

Get the Look: Anne Hathaway’s Silver French Manicure

Dec 10, 2012 @ 12:28 pm

Anne Hathaway has been getting creative with her nails lately, and we’re obsessed with the blinged-out reverse French manicure she wore to the London premiere of Les Miserables. The star’s digits are a perfect complement to her Givenchy dress, and her manicurist Jenni Draper opted for a budget-friendly trio of lacquers by Mavala, so nailing the look is even easier—they run for just $5 a bottle! Draper added a pewter tip with the brand’s Silver polish over the pinky-nude base in Reno. If you have trouble holding a steady hand, use a strip of tape or a French tip sticker to create a crisp line, but let the neutral polish dry completely before affixing the appliques. Heavy-duty glues can damage the nail bed, so Draper applied a combination of rhinestones with Mavala’s Sparkling Silver glitter lacquer. Do the same by layering on two even coats of the polish, and while it is still wet, press the 3D elements onto the nail. Follow with a generous sweep of clear top coat to lock the crystals into place. Pick up the nail lacquers at beautybay.com to try your hand at the look now!
