Our favorite looks this week—plucked from our Look of the Day section—happened to represent two of spring’s biggest trends: black and white, and shades of red. Jennifer Lopez was white hot in Lanvin, Miranda Kerr stepped out with a leather Givenchy tote and buckled Barbara Bui booties, Michelle Obama took the Inaugural Ball stage in red Jason Wu, Diane Kruger wore Chanel to the label’s haute couture show, and Rose Byrne wore a draped Balenciaga dress in her namesake color. So who do you think dressed best? Vote in the poll below! More
Yesterday the ladies dressed in their best to celebrate Barack Obama as he was sworn into office for a second term President of the United States. First Lady Michelle Obama looked radiant as she proudly stood beside her husband in a Thom Browne navy and light blue checked coat, which she accessorized with an embellished J.Crew belt, gloves, and Reed Krakoff boots. Vice President Joe Biden’s wife Jill Biden wore a little white dress with a gray coat, both by Lela Rose. Later that evening at the Inaugural Ball, Alicia Keys radiated in a patriotic red Michael Kors gown as she sang her hit girl-power anthem”Girl on Fire.” To see what all of the other famous guests and performers wore to yesterday’s festivities, click through the gallery!
While her husband was being sworn in as President of the United States yesterday during his inauguration, Michelle Obama had the world wondering: what designer would she choose for the Commander-in-Chief’s Inaugural Ball? When she hit the dance floor last night in Washington, D.C., her choice was clear: following her 2009 stunner, she once again went with American designer Jason Wu. This year’s gown, in ruby chiffon and velvet, stands in contrast to the ivory one she wore to the same event in 2009. Wu was clearly over the moon to see the First Lady wearing his design again: as soon as she stepped out in red, he tweeted, “#InShock!” The designer also visited NBC’s Today show this morning, where he explained that he and his team “were glued to the screen” to see which design Mrs. Obama would choose. “I wanted to really represent her with the best of my ability,” he added. So tell us: which gown do you like better? Vote below!

From being named the next collaborator for Target to having countless celebrities wear his clothes, Prabal Gurung had great 2012! “There are so many [highlights] from this year, I really can’t pinpoint just one,” the designer told InStyle.com at the New York launch of Target and Neiman Marcus’s collaborative holiday collection, where he had designed a festive cape and clutch for the limited-edition capsule. “It was huge!” Of course, there are a few that stick out in his mind—thanks to some Very Important Ladies. “More than anything else, when the First Lady wore my clothes, I would say that created an impact bigger than I ever imagined. And also the Duchess of Cambridge.” (We can’t forget how excited he was when he first learned that Kate had worn his dress!) “It’s absolutely unreal, surreal, and out of this world when you see someone you never would even think about wearing your clothes,” Gurung added. “When there is a plethora of choices for them, and they decide to wear yours, it’s a whole different feeling.” We hope his happy feelings continue through 2013 and beyond!

First Lady Michelle Obama celebrated President Obama’s re-election in Chicago last night wearing a magenta pintucked high-shine silk dress look by Michael Kors. The American designer, who launched his label 31 years ago, was thrilled to see Mrs. Obama in his design on such an important evening. ”Mrs. Obama looked chic and elegant as always on election night,” he said in a statement. “My dress, with its strong color, clean lines and feminine silhouette, has all the elements that have become a part of the trademark style of our First Lady.” The piece is actually one she’s worn before, in 2010 for a military Medal of Honor ceremony at the White House. This time around, she accessorized the look with a 1950s Schreiner magenta rhinestone brooch from House of Lavande.
