First Lady Michelle Obama signed copies of her book American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America in Washington, D.C. yesterday wearing Tory Burch‘s ”MaryGrace” top, a style that features floral embellishments around the neckline. We’re loving her deep navy color, but if you’re looking for something lighter, it’s also available in a pastel lemon. Scoop up the piece for $350 at toryburch.com, and shop her book for $30 at amazon.com.

Tips for When You Fall Out of Love with Your Bangs, Like Michelle Obama

Apr 10, 2013 @ 5:00 pm

Michelle Obama might be bidding her bangs goodbye! The First Lady kicked off the new year by adding fringe to her trademark bob, but now, she’s working on growing them out. “The bangs are a day-by-day proposition,” she told ET. “They’re starting to grow out, getting a little irritating, but it’s okay!” We’re fans of Obama’s current side-swept look, but we can certainly sympathize with that awkward in-between phase. That’s why asked hair pros Heath Grout and Harry Josh for their bang-maintenance tips. Read their thoughts below!

IF YOU WANT TO GROW YOUR BANGS
“Growing out your bangs takes patience!” said TIGI’s U.S. Creative Director Heath Grout, who recommends starting with a side-swept style like Obama’s. “Remember, you must blow-dry the root in the direction you want your bangs to go,” he added. “After a couple of months, go to your stylist to trim your bangs using a deep parallel point technique. This will encourage the fringe to sweep out of the way as it grows longer and heavier.”

IF YOU WANT TO TRIM YOUR BANGS
Many salons offer complimentary bang trims, but if you’re taking matters into your own hands, start by blow-drying your fringe completely straight with a paddle brush. “You need to see the direction of the strands, from root to brow,” said Rose Byrne‘s mane man Harry Josh. Then, comb your bangs straight down, divide in half, and work with one portion at a time. Snip upward into the tips until they’re wispy. “Pecking at the ends first is easier than cutting straight across,” he added. Once the tips are thinned out, you can taper them into a straight line until you reach your desired length.

Layered Bangs: 6 Celebrity Looks That Will Inspire You

Mar 18, 2013 @ 10:30 am
Bangs - Taylor Swift - Michelle Obama - Zooey DeschanelGiampaol Sgura; WireImage (2)

Talk about fringe benefits! While stars like Taylor Swift and Zooey Deschanel have made heavy bangs a part of their signature hairstyles, Michelle Obama and Kim Kardashian have hopped on the trend, too, by incorporating the brow-skimming addition to each of their ‘dos. Their trick: Unexpected frizz is the sworn enemy of layered bangs, so to lock out the elements, apply an anti-frizz cream onto damp strands, then blow-dry using a round brush to work the product into hair. Plus, if you haven’t tried the look yet but are considering it, we have even more celebrity bangs in our Hollywood Makeover Tool, so you can see yourself in bangs before heading to the salon. One of the biggest moments at tonight’s Academy Awards was when the First Lady of the United States appeared via video feed from the Governors Ball in Washington, D.C. to announce Argo, the winner for Best Picture. Ever an icon of classical but on-trend style, Michelle Obama stayed true to form in a dark, glittering sleeveless gown by Naeem Khan. The custom-made smoke grey and silver art deco beaded gown’s square neckline paired well with Michelle’s dangling Sutra Silver at Fragments earrings, which highlighted her new fringe. Along with shades of pastel, glittering metallics marked one of the biggest trends of the night—we saw it on Naomi Watts, Halle Berry, and Nicole Kidman too.

Michelle Obama’s Official Portrait: Her Dress Designer Reed Krakoff Is “Honored”

Feb 22, 2013 @ 1:36 pm

The White House released First Lady Michelle Obama’s second official portrait this week—updated for the POTUS’s second term to include her new fringe—and for the new snap, she opted to wear an asymmetrical, navy silk and wool crepe dress by designer Reed Krakoff. (In 2009, she wore Michael Kors.) And the New York designer, the same person behind Coach’s awesome accessories, is thrilled with the presidential nod. “Michelle Obama is one of the great style icons of our time,” Krakoff told InStyle.com. “She embodies the strength and empowerment at the core of the Reed Krakoff woman, so it is an honor that she chose to wear one of our designs.” Tell us: Do you like her look?

What Did Michelle Obama Wear to the State of the Union Address? Modified Jason Wu

Feb 13, 2013 @ 10:30 am

Michelle Obama wore Jason Wu (once again) for last night’s State of the Union address—but this time with a twist. The burgundy and black leather dress is a modified version of a cocktail look from the designer’s pre-fall 2013 collection. The designer converted the black leather spaghetti straps in his original into a full-coverage boat neck that still allowed the First Lady to display her infamously sculpted arms, along with a repeat Alexis Bittar floral brooch. “To have maximum effect at a big occasion doesn’t necessary mean having to wear a loud and overly embellished dress,” Wu once told InStyle.com. “Sometimes less is more.” This dress is a prime example of his vision. So, do you like her custom look?
