Last night, Michelle Obama attended President Obama’s annual State of the Union address in Washington, D.C. wearing a sapphire blue dress by Barbara Tfank accessorized with an Alexis Bittar brooch. Today, we caught up with the Los Angeles clothing designer, inset, who told us she customized the look from one of her resort 2012 collection pieces just for the First Lady. ”It is a great honor and pleasure to assist The First Lady,” she told InStyle.com exclusively. (Of course!)  Ashley Tisdale sweetly showed off her work-in-progress, posting a TwitPic of her mother on a ladder, adjusting the last whirl of a garland. Our sentimental favorite? Michelle Obama Doesn’t Stress Over Shopping

Oct 19, 2011 @ 12:15 pm

Michelle Obama shared her fashion motto this week! “I don’t buy it if I don’t love it,” the First Lady said during a White House round table discussion, the AP reports. She then added that she prefers a laid-back approach to shopping. “I don’t want to waste anxiety on something as limited as clothes,” she said. “If I’m comfortable in what I have on, then all my attention can go to the people in the room, and I don’t have to worry about whether something is riding up or whether my feet hurt.” Good advice! Do you agree?

Michelle Obama Celebrates J. Mendel’s 2011 Fashion Design Award

Sep 15, 2011 @ 1:40 pm

Gilles Mendel, the designer behind J. Mendel, dresses celebrities like Taylor Swift, Mila Kunis, Zoe Saldana, and Hilary Swank all the time, but there was one introduction that left him starstruck—First Lady Michelle Obama. “I had a moment with Mrs. Obama and she was so gracious,” Mendel told InStyle.com at his New York Fashion Week show yesterday. His moment happened at the National Design Awards at the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt Museum in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, where the designer accepted this year’s Fashion Design Award, winning over finalists Prabal Gurung and Jason Wu, both of whom dressed the First Lady in the past. “I sat next to her during the luncheon,” he continued. “It was so surreal. She really was a vision. I’m critical, but I have to say—she blew my mind. She was so perfect!” So does this mean we’ll be seeing the First Lady wear a J. Mendel design for the first time soon? “I have millions of ideas for her,” he said. “I’m working on it.
