Downton Abbey Season 3: Lady Sybil Is The Most Fashionable Character

Jan 4, 2013 @ 11:57 am

There are plenty of fashionable ladies on Downton AbbeyUgg boots and all—but there’s one character who stands sartorially supreme to the rest. “The most fashionable character is Lady Sybil,” Joanne Froggatt (who plays Anna Smith) told InStyle.com of the youngest Crawley sister, played by Jessica Brown Findlay. “She’s the most forward-thinking. In the first season, she comes down in pantaloons! She’s the one who pushes the boundaries and is most adventurous in her fashion as a character.” And Froggatt says Lady Sybil’s fashion will continue to progress in Season 3, which takes place in the 1920s. “I think I’m allowed to tell you that she’s the first character to do the 20s bob,” she said. “I don’t think I’m giving too much away by that!” Tune in to see for yourself as Downton Abbey returns to PBS Sunday January 6 at 9/8c.

The ladies of Downton Abbey always look buttoned up and classy, but they have a fashion trick up their sleeves—or, shall we say, under their dresses. “When it’s raining, we wear Ugg boots underneath our dresses,” Michelle Dockery (who plays Lady Mary Crawley) told InStyle.com. “It’s not always as glamorous as it may seem!” Could she have worn them down the aisle when Mary wed Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens), along with her hand-crafted gown and custom-made tiara? Now that’s a pairing! Tune in to see what Dockery, Maggie Smith (Violet Crawley), and Elizabeth McGovern (Countess Cora) are all up to when the critically-acclaimed show returns to PBS on Sunday, January 6, at 9/8 c.

A period drama with some of our favorite leading Brits? Count us in! Restless, a two-part miniseries on the Sundance Channel, premieres tonight at 9pm EST and will conclude with its final part December 14. The series stars Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery, Hayley Atwell, and Charlotte Rampling, and tells the thrilling story of a daughter who discovers that her mother was recruited as a British spy during World War II. It takes place in two different time periods, one in the 1940s with Hayley Atwell’s character, Eva, and then 30 years later in 1976 with Charlotte Rampling as the older version of Eva and Michelle Dockery as her daughter, Ruth. As Ruth (Dockery) unravels the truth about her mother’s past, we get to see all of the action unfold through the young Eva (Atwell), who takes on various wartime assignments all over the world as a member of the British Secret Service. “What I love about the film is that there are moments when the young Eva and Ruth kind of run parallel with each other,” Dockery told the Sundance Channel about her and Hayley Atwell’s story lines. Tune in tonight at 9pm EST on Sundance and click through for some fun facts about the miniseries, including details on Michelle Dockery’s 70s wardrobe!

Lady Mary Crawley’s Wedding Dress Cost $6,500 to Make

Sep 26, 2012 @ 5:10 pm

We finally stopped obsessing over the amazing custom-made tiara Michelle Dockery wears during Lady Mary Crawley’s wedding to Matthew Crawley on Downton Abbey, and now there’s another reason to freak! Caroline McCall, the costume designer for the British hit series, confirmed to Grazia UK that the wedding dress Dockery dons to walk down the aisle was crafted by hand, and cost 4,000 British pounds (that‘s nearly $6,500!) to create. “Lady Mary’s wedding dress was the most expensive costume we’ve made,” McCall told Grazia. “It’s a silver lace tabard fabric that goes into a train at the back, and underneath is a silk dress with silk sleeves. The lace goes into a ‘V’ at the back with tiny buttons and it’s completely edged with tiny rice pearls and Swarovski crystal.” A tiara made of antique diamonds and a dress edged with Swarovski crystals? No wonder Lady Mary’s grandmother (played by the epic Maggie Smith) once politely asked: “What is a weekend?
