Deep V Dresses Have Stars Taking the Plunge

As summer transitions into fall, there’s one silhouette celebrities keep reaching for—the ultra-deep V. “I’m always trying to push the boundaries,” Jenna Dewan-Tatum told InStyle.com of her Naeem Khan look at the designer’s fashion show during New York Fashion Week. “Everyone always tries to hold me back, like, ‘Jen, be a little bit more closed.’ This is my nice happy medium.” Zoe Saldana (in Gucci), Nicole Richie (in Maria Lucia Hohan), Lea Michele (in Emilio Pucci), and Malin Akerman (in J. Mendel) seem to agree, all wearing their own interpretations of the exposed look in the past two weeks. “The deep V is a tricky look to pull off but it really plays to proportion and lengthens the body,” celebrity stylist Taylor Jacobson, who dresses Kate Beckinsale and Ashley Benson, told InStyle.com. Her tip: “Make sure to try on before you buy, and stick to delicate jewelry pieces to keep the look classy.” (You’ll notice each of the stars above are necklace-free, hint hint.) Dewan-Tatum also suggests walking out the door with some extra confidence. “You just have to work it,” she said. “Just own it. It doesn’t matter what your shape is. Everyone can wear a version of this and feel comfortable.” Inspired yet? Go for it!

Malin Akerman’s Failproof Hairstyle Idea: The Top Knot

Aug 21, 2012 @ 1:05 pm

Hot off filming a cameo as punk royalty Debbie Harry in next year’s biopic CBGBMalin Akerman shared a rockstar beauty tip of her own—how to create a great-looking hairstyle with little effort. “You throw it up in a bun, it’s the easiest way to impress,” she told InStyle.com at GenArt’s event honoring Vena Cava in Los Angeles, where she showed off the top knot she pinned for the evening. “I have an amazing friend who’s a hairstylist and she told me to get those little clear elastics at Rite-Aid and put it up in a ponytail and flip it around with some pins. So simple!” (Shop the elastics for $4 at riteaidonlinestore.com.) And she’s not the only one in love with this easy ‘do! See more stars showing off top knots in the gallery.

Celebrities love Cushnie et Ochs! The Parsons-trained design team of Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs launched their sexy, body-con line after graduating in 2008, and quickly became industry darlings, winning the Ecco Domani Fashion Fund Award and becoming a finalist for the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Fashion Fund Award. It’s no surprise then how the pair’s structured, lightweight creations have wooed stylish stars, including Olivia WildeKerry WashingtonEva Longoria, First Lady Michelle Obama, and Malin Akerman, who stood out in a vivid red design at the InStyle Summer Soiree last week. “I’ve kind of fallen in love with Cushnie et Ochs lately,” Akerman told InStyle.com. “All their stuff is just really cool and sleek. I’m obsessed!” And the designers are thrilled: “Seeing stars in our clothes is amazing,” they told InStyle.com, noting that empowering women is their ultimate goal. “Yes, [our clothes] are sexy and body con, but as female designers we construct our clothes to really support women and allow them to feel confident and comfortable when wearing them.” Click through the gallery to see more celebrities who love Cushnie et Ochs, and then shop for your own pieces at shopbop.com and ssense.com.

InStyle invited some of our closest friends—Nikki Reed, Emilie de Ravin, Sophia Bush, Malin Akerman, and Erin Wasson included—to toast to the season at our annual Summer Soiree last night, held the London Hotel Rooftop in Los Angeles. “It is lovely,” Bush said of the atmosphere, which included a Gordon Ramsey-designed menu, Starbucks-infused drinks, and a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream bar. ”I mean, what can I get my hands on first? I try it all!” But there was something she had to do first: “I have a couple girlfriends [here] that I am going to hug. That is always the priority, hug the people I like.” Like Bush, the evening acted as a catch-up session, with the stars reminiscing about the days and nights that made summer 2012 unforgettable. Click through the gallery to see who else attended, and read about some of their favorite moments of this scorching season.
