The season finale of Fashion Star aired last night, and Kara Laricks took home the top prize—a $6 million contract with Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, and H&M! “I very specifically remember standing on that stage and thinking nothing but ‘I’m grateful,’” Laricks told InStyle.com exclusively. “It’s been a lifelong dream to be able to create a full collection, and see people shopping it and people loving it.” While the designer showcased collections for all three retailers last night, our top pick is the sleeveless tuxedo shift dress she designed for Macy’s ($79 at macys.com). With its sleek cut and black and white color palette, it’s the perfect canvas for bold accessories. “I want people to be able to celebrate each side of their personality,” Laricks said of her designs. “I design in a way that you can take any piece and determine how you want to style it and make it comfortable for you.” Congratulations, Kara!

Karl Lagerfeld Designing a Lower-Priced Line for Macy’s

Nov 24, 2010 @ 12:19 pm

What do Karl Lagerfeld and Madonna have in common? Beyond a shared love of couture and all things fabulous, Lagerfeld, like Madonna before him, is designing a lower-priced line for Macy’s. His yet-to-be named capsule collection will be sold in 250 Macy’s stores and online starting in September 2011. While sure to generate long lines at Macy’s stores come next fall, the collection isn’t a surprise to those who follow the Chanel designer—Karl alluded to a diffusion line when he opted not to show his signature collection during Paris fashion week, saying he was working on a masstige ready-to-wear line. But Lagerfeld is only the beginning. Once he kicks things off, Macy’s will feature a new lower priced designer line every two months starting in February 2012 with former John Galliano employee Kinder Aggugini, followed by Vivienne Westwood, Paul Smith, Calvin Klein, Costume National, and Versace!

Joel & Benji Madden Debut Macy’s “Mad Picks”

Aug 23, 2010 @ 11:55 am

Joel and Benji Madden may be known more for their music than for their fashions, but that’s all about to change: This Wednesday, the Good Charlotte singers will unveil their “Mad Picks” capsule collection with Macy’s in-house brand, American Rag. The picks stay true to the duos rock-and-roll aesthetic, featuring key pieces like boho vests, shredded denim and embellished tops. “We like to wear clothes that you can wear up or dress down, like a T-shirt you can throw a jacket over for dinner,” the brothers said in a statement. Click through the gallery  below to preview a few of the hand-picked looks.
