Wizard of Oz Dorothy Dress Sells for $480,000 at Auction

Nov 12, 2012 @ 10:59 am

A month after we learned that Judy Garland‘s iconic The Wizard of Oz Dorothy dress would be up for grabs at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills (with a $200,000 starting bid), it’s found a new place to call home! An anonymous bidder shelled out $480,000 for the blue gingham pinafore with white puff sleeves, which was right in the $400,000-to-$600,000 range that auctioneers predicted the dress would fetch. According to the auction house’s Web site, it is one of the only original complete versions of the Adrian-designed costumes still in existence and includes a handwritten label with Garland’s name inscribed on it. We’re sure the new owner is over the rainbow about his/her piece of film fashion history, but we just hope there are a pair of ruby slippers to match. (Hey, maybe Leonardo DiCaprio is involved…) Meanwhile, the rest of us will have to get our Wizard of Oz fix from the prequel, out March 8, 2013, and starring Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis, and James Franco. If we only had some cash!

Downton Abbey 1920s-Inspired Wedding Dresses

Nov 7, 2012 @ 10:41 am

News flash! 1920s fashion is having a major moment! With the anticipation of Downton Abbey‘s return on January 6 and the 2013 release of The Great Gatsby, starring Carey Mulligan and Leonardo DiCaprio, how could it not? When hit PBS series Downton Abbey kicks off its third season stateside, the Crawley clan will be ushering in a new decade and a new marriage—Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Cousin Matthew (Dan Stevens) are set to wed. And while flapper fringe and knotted pearls (à la The Great Gatsby) may immediately come to mind when you think ’20s fashion, Downton Abbey appears to be taking a more subtle approach, and if you’re planning to say “I do” in a wedding dress in the style of the Jazz Age, we suggest doing the same to avoid looking costumey. You may not be able to snag Lady Mary’s custom-made gown, but a number of designers including Reem Acra and Alice Temperley took a cue from the era for their most recent (Fall 2013) bridal collections. Click through the gallery below to see our favorite ’20s-inspired wedding dresses.

The Great Gatsby Release Date Moved to Next Summer!

Aug 6, 2012 @ 4:00 pm

Say it ain’t so! After teasing us with a glittering, gorgeous trailer back in May, Warner Bros. Pictures just announced that Baz Luhrman’s Great Gatsby remake, originally slated for a Christmas Day release, is getting bumped all the way to summer 2013. Not only does the film boast a stellar cast we love (ahem, Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire), but it’s filled to its champagne brim with period designer duds, like the boys’ Brooks Brothers bespoke suits—and we didn’t want to wait any longer to see it all in 3D. But since we must, expect to spot us digging out our paperbacks and watching the fabulous trailer shown above on repeat.

What’s old is new again! Fifteen-year-old Chloe Moretz recently landed the leading role in the forthcoming remake of Carrie, a character first made famous by Sissy Spacek in 1976. And the Stephen King thriller isn’t the only reboot coming our way: Carey Mulligan is starring in a fresh take on The Great Gatsby, while new versions of Annie and A Star is Born are also in the works. It’s not that Hollywood is fresh out of new ideas—it’s that these ideas are just so worthy of watching, generation after generation. Check out some of our favorites in the gallery.

Would You Wear a Titanic-Inspired Fragrance?

Mar 26, 2012 @ 3:30 pm

QVC launched a fragrance to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, and the scent has a story as compelling as Jack and Rose‘s! Legacy 1912 Titanicä is based on the perfume vials brought onboard by passenger and British perfumer Adolphe Saafield. He survived the ship’s crash, but his scents remained on the ocean floor until they were recently recovered by RMS Titanic Inc, and replicated for QVC’s fragrance!  The delicate blend of rose, amber, and fresh lemon is available for $69 at qvc.com. Tell us, would you wear a Titanic-inspired scent?
