This has already been a busy summer for movie premieres, and the season isn’t over yet. Today marks the release of two new flicks: Red 2 (starring Helen Mirren, Mary-Louise Parker, and Catherine Zeta-Jones), and Girl Most Likely (starring Matt Dillon, Kristen Wiig, and Darren Criss). My motto is “Don’t ever have a motto!” Kristen Wiig told InStyle last year of her approach to fashion. And for such a freewheeler, we’re consistently impressed with her red-carpet looks, which she puts together with help from her stylist, Erin Walsh. Since Bridesmaids propelled Wiig into the spotlight, her style has become something we define as “approachable girl-next-door”—which she solidified this week when she premiered in new film, Girl Most Likely (in theaters today), in a LWD by Viktor & Rolf. The 39-year-old actress is a fan of neutrals and solid colors and plays up her whites, blacks, and nudes with bold jewelry accents and shoes. And she’s not afraid to try new trends like printed dresses (in Theyskens’ Theory), jumpsuits (in Valentino), and cut-outs (in Michael Kors). Kristen Wiig cozied up to her on-screen love interest Darren Criss at the New York premiere of their film Girl Most Likely, hosted by the Cinema Society and Brooks Brothers at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema. The two had little opportunity to chat on the red carpet, but had more time at the after-party at Hotel Americano, also attended by co-stars Matt Dillon and Padma Lakshmi (she has a walk-on role). In the film, Wiig plays Imogene, the just-dumped New Yorker on the verge of a nervous breakdown who is sent to live with her wacky, lovable, gambler of a mother (Annette Bening) in Ocean City, New Jersey after faking her own suicide. ”There is something nice about going home and reconnecting with your family,” Wiig (in Viktor & Rolf) said of the film’s lesson. “I think a lot of people move away from their hometowns. It’s kind of nice to reconnect with it and make peace with it, I think.” Wiig uses her humor to keep this movie flowing, but her mom’s boyfriend (Dillon) and her mom’s new casino star housemate (Criss) are the real scene-stealers. The film opens Friday, July 19. Click to see more from inside this week’s biggest parties.
Summer is the season of blockbusters. Ever since Leonardo DiCaprio kicked off 2013’s batch of hits with The Great Gatsby, we’ve been keeping tabs on the flicks that top the box-office each weekend, including Man of Steel, Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring, and most recently, The Heat (starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy) and The Lone Ranger (starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer). Arrested Development’s Costume Designer Katie Sparks on Never-Nude Shorts, Dressing Michael Cera, and Portia de Rossi’s GenerosityJun 25, 2013 @ 11:45 am
After a seven-year hiatus, Arrested Development returned this month with 15 new episodes for season four, all available for instant streaming on Netflix. Producing such a season offered challenges in scheduling and logistics for each member of the fictional Bluth-Fünke family, with all of them going in and out of episodes that featured both flashbacks to previous seasons and new plotlines. That’s where the wardrobe department came into play. Costume designer Katie Sparks, who worked behind-the-scenes for the first two seasons (she left in the third to raise her daughter), was responsible for keeping the visual story seamless—including re-appearances of Tobias Fünke’s “never-nudes” and Gob Bluth’s silkscreen-printed bathrobe. Watch the clip above to peek inside Sparks’s closet for Arrested Development, and scroll down to read our exclusive interview with the designer. One thing you’ll learn: The costumes are just as calculated as the dialogue.
What was it like returning to the show after seven years?
“It was really surreal for me, I hadn’t seen the actors or been on set for seven years. Everyone seemed the same, but what was amazing was seeing how much Michael Cera and Alia Shawkat grew up. It was amazing to jump to the future and see them all grown up, it was like a family reunion. Arrested Development really elevated these actors’ careers and to see their success after the show was great, everyone was so happy to be there. I’ve also known Mitch [creator Mitchell Hurwitz] for so many years and I felt very fortunate that I was one of the few asked back.” More
While Monsters University was dominating the box office this weekend, stars of future summer blockbusters rolled out the red carpet to debut their new flicks. Sandra Bullock (in Prabal Gurung) and Melissa McCarthy (in Tadashi Shoji) celebrated their new comedy The Heat in New York City, Kristen Wiig posed with one of her animated co-stars at the premiere of Despicable Me 2 in Universal City, California, and Steve Carell and AnnaSophia Robb (in RED Valentino) smiled for the cameras as they arrived at the Los Angeles screening of their indie-flick The Way, Way Back. The fashion world is in mourning: Annabel Tollman, former fashion director and stylist to the stars, passed away in her sleep last week at age 39. The British stylist became known for her her ability to highlight the female figure, which led her to dress a range of body types and personalities in Hollywood, including Scarlett Johansson (in Valentino), Anne Hathaway (in Nina Ricci), the Olsen twins, and Kristen Wiig (in J. Mendel). Her sartorial vision, her keen eye, and her old-Hollywood glamour aesthetic will be missed. In her memory, click to see several of the memorable celebrity looks she put together for the red carpet.
