After announcing its Anna Karenina-inspired capsule collection this summer, Banana Republic has put the goods on shelves (both brick-and-mortar and virtual)! The designs, by Banana’s Creative Director Simon Kneen (inset), have a 1950s feeleven though the film, based on Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel, takes place in 1870s Russiathanks to costume designer Jacqueline Durran’s Dior New Look-inspired ensembles for the film. “You always take something that’s inspiring, and make it modern and relevant,” Kneen told InStyle.com. “We took the simplicity of the 1950s couture shapes—how architectural they were—and worked them back into the 1870s.” The film, starring Keira Knightley and Jude Law, opens in theaters November 16, but to tide you over check out the entire Banana Republic Anna Karenina collection in the gallery below. Clothing ranges in price from $59 to $500, with shoes and accessories retailing for $29 to $225. Then, head over to bananarepublic.com (and select Banana Republic stores) to start shopping!

While Elie Saab is gearing up for his fashion show in Paris later this month, he seems to already be putting on one at the Toronto International Film Festival. His track record this week is more massive than some labels have all year, with the Lebanese designer dressing some of the biggest names in town. Anna Kendrick chose a onyx lace-sleeve design for the End of Watch premiere; Naomi Watts picked a lavender gown with a plunging neckline for The Impossible premiere; Keira Knightley slipped into a black couture lace gown for her Anna Karenina premiere; and Nina Dobrev of The Perks of Being a Wallflower pulled three looks by Saab, including this red cap-sleeve peplum design for the Argo premiere. “I love this color,” she told InStyle.com of why she picked the look at the Grey Goose-hosted after-party, held at the Soho House. Rachel McAdams of To the Wonder, Jennifer Lawrence of Silver Linings Playbook, and Liana Liberato of Writers also hopped on the Elie Saab bandwagon. This is a fashion show, alright—Toronto style!

Pretty floral dresses are in full bloom on the red carpet, as seen on Keira Knightley (in embroidered Valentino), Elizabeth Banks (in Peter Pilotto), Emma Stoneand Katharine McPhee (both in Dolce & Gabbana). The key to this style is to play up the power of the petals—skip the overpowering shoes and bulky accessories in favor of bare arms and neutral heels. There’s no better way to strut through summer. Or to your next garden party.

Anna Karenina Trailer: Costumes, Keira, and More!

Jun 21, 2012 @ 12:30 pm

No one works period costuming quite like Keira Knightley! The actress re-teamed with her Pride & Prejudice and Atonement director Joe Wright for another ball gown-filled literary classic-turned-film, Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, and the trailer just came out! As the titular Anna, a 19th-century Russian socialite who marries to please her family and scandalously falls in love with another man shortly after, Knightley is dressed to impress in satin gowns, strings upon strings of pearls, and tons of fur fit for the sub-zero climate. Each look is the work of costume designer Jacqueline Durran, the same woman behind the extravagant wardrobing details of Pride & Prejudice and Atonement. Watch the full clip above! Tell us: Do you plan on seeing it? Anna Karenina, which also stars Jude Law and Aaron Johnson (of Kick-Ass fame), debuts in theaters this November.

Summer Headbands: Emma Stone and Keira Knightley

Jun 19, 2012 @ 5:40 pm

Looking for a chic way to keep cool this summer? Slip on an embellished headband like Keira Knightley or Emma Stone. Knightley matched a red floral accessory to her dress, while Stone’s ethereal gold band stood out against her tousled waves. The intricate accessories flatter cuts of all lengths, and are an easy way to add polish to up and down ‘dos alike. Plus, they’re perfect for keeping your strands out of your face as the temperatures rise. Thinner versions tend to slide around, so make sure your band fits snugly before securing your updo. A light mist of hairspray around the accessory gives the style extra staying power.
