Stars showed up in pretty summer-ready colors at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards last night, held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena is Las Vegas. Katy Perry matched her iridescent lilac Blumarine design to her plum highlights, Taylor Swift took home the event’s Woman of the Year award in a strawberry red lace Elie Saab gown, Carrie Underwood turned up the volume in a frothy slate blue and rose tulle Oscar de la Renta creation, and Miley Cyrus took the plunge in double-breasted Jean Paul Gaultier tuxedo mini dress. Katy Perry’s 3D Floral Nails: All the Details!

After Katy Perry tweeted a picture of her pastel French manicure with 3D roses last week, we caught up with her manicurist Kimmie Kyees to find out why. Turns out, the botanical talons will be featured in an upcoming project. “I went into my kit and I found these flowers I bought years ago,” Kyees said of the design. “I never knew what to do with them because they were a bit large, but then it hit me—tear them apart and use the pieces!” Kyees made examples for Perry, and the nails were a hit on the set. “She loved them so much, she tweeted them, and we packaged them up for the label in case they want to give them away or auction them off in the future.” Either way, we hope these innovative designs make a reappearance sometime soon.

Katy Perry’s New Hair Color: “Purple Velvet”

Are there any hair colors Katy Perry can’t pull off? The singer, who dyed her strands blue in January, revealed a new amethyst ’do at the Coachella Music Festival on Friday. “Her new color is what I call purple velvet,” her colorist Rita Hazan told InStyle.com exclusively. “It’s dark and rich. It’s very punk rock. I love creating colors for her because she always knows how to rock it!” And this isn’t the first time Perry tried The Color Purple—she wore a soft lavender hue on our October cover. Katy Perry got a G.I. Jane makeover for her new video “Part of Me”! Gone are her quirky costumes, blue hair, exaggerated eye makeup, and pin-up look, replaced instead with fatigues, combat boots, a makeup-free face, and a hacked-off dark brown bob for her Marines-inspired video. “This song feels like one of the most aggressive songs I’ve ever put out,” she told MTV. “It’s kind of an affirmation of strength. So I wanted to go the strongest route I possibly could.” She ventured to San Diego’s Camp Pendleton Marine base to shoot over three days, got real training, used real Marines as co-stars (no actors!), and worked with real equipment. “I just wanted to really go for it,” she continued. “I want to prove my strength.” So while her “throw your bombs and your blows” lyrics tout her unbreakable soul—in this video, she sets out to prove just how indestructible she really is.
