Katie Holmes has come a long way from her days as Joey Potter on Dawson’s Creek, now playing mother to little one Suri while also firming up her place as a worldwide style icon and fashion designer. The actress turns 34 today, and we’re taking a look back at how she’s grown up over the years. From her 1997 breakout role opposite James van der Beek to her role as a red carpet fixture, we’ve taken notes the whole way! See Katie’s transformation in the gallery.
The Robin Hood Foundation’s 12-12-12 Concert for Hurricane Sandy Relief took place at New York’s Madison Square Garden last night! InStyle was backstage for the night’s biggest moments, where we spotted stars like Blake Lively (in Isabel Marant), Katie Holmes (in Tom Ford), and Jimmy Fallon with wife Nancy all strutting down the red carpet prior to their on-stage appearances. See more behind-the-scenes photos in the gallery!

This week was all about bright colors and even brighter stars. We kicked things off with Katie Holmes at the red carpet launch of Narciso Rodriguez’s DesigNation collection for Kohl’s. Then, at Gap, we snapped a spectrum of colorful Spring 2013 flats, and talk about bright—check out the rocks in Martin Katz‘s anniversary collection! See more of this week’s best photos in the gallery below, and come back every Saturday for our favorite shots.
Narciso Rodriguez for Kohl’s DesigNation lands in stores in a few weeks, and we can hardly wait! Neither can the Cuban-American designer’s loyal celebrity fans, including Julianna Margulies, Katie Holmes, and Emma Roberts, who all celebrated his new lineup in New York last night. “I love that he loves women,” Margulies told InStyle.com of why she’s a Narciso follower (he even made her wedding dress!), while wearing the $64 two-tone dress from the collection. “He respects us and he cuts dresses to looks best on a woman’s body. He loves a curve. And this dress? It’s just not going to go out of style.” Rodriguez is thrilled that his pals took to his creations, like Emma Roberts, who wore the collection’s $60 V-neck design. “When you see women who have such great style that look so beautiful, it makes me very proud,” he told us. “I approached designing this collection the same way I would approach my own collection. I love beautiful things, and there wasn’t any holding back on style or design. My objective was to create a beautiful collection.” Click through the gallery to preview the entire Narciso Rodriquez for Kohl’s DesigNation—which was inspired by his recent trip to Istanbul and is full of the clean lines and architectural inspirations he’s known for—and shop it when it lands in Kohl’s stores and kohls.com starting November 7th.
It was a colorful day at New York Fashion Week! Katie Holmes painted the town red, presenting Holmes & Yang for the first time at Lincoln Center, where she made her fashion mission clear: “We as women spend a lot of money on clothes—they better make us look skinny and hot.” J. Mendel’s Gilles Mendel showed a self-assured collection of brilliant tangerine pieces, while Michael Kors created the gotta-have-it shoe of the spring—in unexpected kelly green! Click through the gallery for the best looks and hottest stars in the tents!
While Katie Holmes the actress, is busy prepping for her latest Broadway production, Katie Holmes the designer is all about you. “We as women spend a lot of money on clothes, they better make us look skinny and hot,” Holmes told InStyle.com at the Holmes & Yang presentation this morning at New York Fashion Week. Her partner Jeanne Yang reinforces the importance of looking amazing—and also looking yourself. “You can be that girl that throws on a tough leather jacket,” she says. “But you can still be really girly.” And a tough leather jacket is actually Holmes’s most-coveted piece from the collection. “The quilted leather jacket [is my favorite]. What I love about it is that it’s masculine and feminine. I would wear it with jeans and a t-shirt, but I’d also put it with a little black cocktail dress, and shorts for the weekend.” And a wide range of ladies consider themselves Holmes & Yang women. “A couple of seasons ago, we had a girl buy our maxi dress for her prom,” Holmes tells us. “Then the same dress was sold to a woman in her sixties who was going on vacation. It was really nice to see that happen.”
