Katharine McPhee was a Smash last night on American Idol, thanks in part to a brand new haircut! The AI alumna chopped her ombre shoulder-skimming waves into a chin-length bob, which she debuted during her performance with One Republic. When we last spoke to McPhee, she told InStyle.com that her style inspiration was Diane Keaton, so it’s no surprise to see the star working her icon’s signature ‘do. Uncle Sam has a lot of celebrity fans! Jennifer Hudson (in Roberto Cavalli) celebrated the Fourth of July with an outdoor performance at the Boston Hatch Shell, Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck brought their patriotically-outfitted daughter Seraphina to a bash in Los Angeles, and Katharine McPhee (in a jumpsuit by The Hellers and a Theonne blazer) performed the national anthem at Bryant Park in New York City. “It’s one of my favorite holidays,” McPhee told InStyle.com. “I’ve just always kind of been patriotic.” And she’s not the only one—see who else cheered the red, white, and blue in the gallery.

Smash Star Katharine McPhee Makes InStyle’s Sexy List

Katharine McPhee is such a Smash that she is one of the lucky twelve to make our “Sexy Dozen” list (which also includes Ewan McGregor) for InStyle‘s new June issue. And we’ve just released footage of the steamy shoot! Go behind-the-scenes of the Smash star’s boxing ring-side photos, and see the actress knock out some seriously sultry poses (Marilyn would be proud). “To me, Marilyn Monroe was sexiest when she wasn’t aware of it—it just came from within,” said McPhee, who portrays the blonde bombshell on the NBC hit show. A lot of people tuned in to see Katharine McPhee’s Smash debut on NBC last night! Around 11.5 million viewers, actually, TVbytheNumbers reports. “What I love about the show is that it’s about dreams, and how no dream is too big,” said McPhee, who got her first taste of fame as a contestant on Season 5 of American Idol. In Smash, which co-stars Debra Messing, Angelica Huston, and Megan Hilty, she plays a struggling actress vying for the lead role in a musical about Marilyn Monroe’s life.
