DWTS Season 14: Karina Smirnoff’s Outfit Inspired by Bed Sheets

Karina Smirnoff designed the outfits she and partner Gavin DeGraw wore on last night’s Dancing with the Stars, and pulled her inspiration from a mix of piano seduction and bed accessories. “The outfit is a glam version of an undergarment body suit wrapped in a silky bed sheet,” Smirnoff told InStyle.com of their style for their rumba to Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind.” “The story is a couple comes home after a night on the town. The man is dressed in a tux, but takes his jacket off and stays in a white tux shirt—sleeves rolled up—and plays piano for his lady, while she sits on the piano, listening and admiring him.” The pair received a 24 out of 30 for the routine, which he dedicated to his family for supporting his dream of becoming a musician. Dancing With the Stars: Look Out for Karina’s Costumes

When Dancing with the Stars premieres tonight, make sure to take a close look at Karina Smirnoff and Gavin DeGraw’s outfits—Karina designed them! “This is one of my favorite aspects of the show, and I can’t wait to start designing our costumes,” the pro dancer told InStyle.com. “I already have a couple of designs ready.” And Smirnoff is hoping the sparkly, fringy, color-coordinated looks will help give her an edge to help her win the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy for the second time in a row. Last year, she won season 13 with partner J.R. Martinez. Tune in to see all the costumes and the dancing live tonight at 8/7c on ABC.

DWTS‘ Karina Smirnoff on Gavin DeGraw: ‘He’s Got Rhythm!’

Dancing with the Stars pro Karina Smirnoff won last season’s Mirror Ball trophy with partner J.R. Martinez, and she’s hoping she can score another win with new partner, singer Gavin DeGraw. “Gavin is doing amazing,” she told InStyle.com exclusively. “He has a sweet, funny personality that comes across in his dancing. And he has rhythm!” Smirnoff hopes she’ll be able to create choreography to some of her partner’s most famous songs like “Not Over You“ and “Chariot.” “As an artist it’s sometimes difficult hear someone else perform your song,” she said. “But if Gavin is up for it, it would great to actually dance to one of his songs!” We can’t wait to see the pair when the show premieres March 19th on ABC.

Dancing With the Stars: See the Perfect Score Dance!

J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff scored straight 10s on Dancing With the Stars last night—twice! The pair received the first perfect score of the season (30 points in total) for their waltz to Jackie DeShannon’s What the World Needs Now is Love. Then in the second round, in which contestants were given 20 minutes to prepare an impromptu jive, Iraq war veteran/motivational speaker Martinez and pro Smirfnoff finished with another 30 points—and a standing ovation. In between spinning with partner Ralph Macchio on Dancing With the Stars, professional dancer Karina Smirnoff made time to design a pair of shoes! Smirnoff created a pair of slouchy boots for Bearpaw—a brand she wears while relaxing before and after dance rehearsals. “With the amount of dancing we do, you want to rest your feet as much as you can,” Smirnoff told WWD. The dancer’s $80 knit-and-suede Aleyska boots are currently available in gray or black on BearpawShoes.com. The adjustable shoes can be cinched to knee-high or ankle-length, and are lined with soft shearling—perfect for pampering tired toes.

Karina Smirnoff Engaged!

Dancing with the Stars pro Karina Smirnoff is engaged to hunky pro-baseball player Brad Penny. The couple managed to keep the engagement a secret for a month—Brad popped the question on October 4th, presenting Karina with a 4.5 carat Asscher-cut diamond. The romantic surprises didn’t stop there, however: Brad wasn’t able to join Karina for Tao’s 5th anniversary party in Vegas this past weekend, so he sent her a hand-written note in a fortune cookie and an Everlon diamond necklace. “I’m marrying a Southern gentleman,” Karina said. Hey Karina, does Brad have a brother?
