Exclusive: What Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) Wore on The Good Wife Season Finale

Apr 29, 2013 @ 11:20 am

The Good Wife season four is over—and what a season finale it was! With a season leaving on a cliffhanger—between Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) resisting temptation by moving to a new firm and becoming the First Lady of Illinois, plus all of the storylines associated with these discoveries—the wardrobe was as dramatic as the plot, and for good reason. “Alicia can be pretty unpredictable, and the looks she wore this episode embodied a new jumping off point with her—it was the springboard to dive into next season,” explained costume designer Daniel Lawson, who dressed the character in a fitted Karen Millen suit and sexy black Antonio Berardi dress for the finale. “This year, the wardrobe has been a feast for the eyes for Alicia. She started out strong in a Proenza Schouler jade jacket, and we’ve built on that strength and sexiness throughout the season.” And that can only mean one thing—more amazing fashion coming to The Good Wife season five. Exclusive The Good Wife Fashion Details: Season 4, Episode 21

A new episode of The Good Wife premiered last night named “A More Perfect Union.” And while and it touched on the unions created and broken at the courtroom and at the firm, we’re more focused on another union—that of costume designer Daniel Lawson, shown inset, and his commitment to making the show a fashion statement for women in the workforce. This season, he’s elevated Julianna Margulies’s lawyer character Alicia Florrick to another level, as seen with his mix of day-to-night Emilio Pucci suits and peplum-covered jackets by rising designer Number 35 (shown). “There is this sense of body and sensuality in there that I’m trying to achieve with business suits,” Lawson told InStyle.com. And with one episode left of the fourth season, we can’t to see what kind of fashion he uses to for the show’s finale. Get all the exclusive details on the looks he picked last night the gallery.

Exclusive The Good Wife Fashion Details: Season 4, Episode 20

Apr 15, 2013 @ 2:11 pm

A new episode of The Good Wife premiered last night, and it touched upon a sensitive subject in the courtroom, rape. For the intense episode, costume designer Daniel Lawson put Julianna Margulies’s lawyer character Alicia Florrick in equally intense looks, like a oatmeal-hued Brioni jacket and an electric blue Giorgio Armani look. “She’s in court a lot and so it’s trying to pull her out of that court world,” Lawson explained of his choices. “I love any time I can punch her up with and bring her to the audience’s attention. That’s certainly what we did here.” Get all the exclusive details the looks he picked last night the gallery, and follow Lawson on Twitter @GoodWifeFashion for the latest updates.

Exclusive The Good Wife Fashion Details: Season 4, Episode 19

Apr 1, 2013 @ 3:00 pm

A new episode of The Good Wife premiered last night, and it proved just how much your fashion can reflect your personality—especially within the context of characters on a TV show. Case in point: Julianna Margulies’s lawyer character Alicia Florrick (shown in Prada) was the complete opposite of guest star Morena Baccarin’s sex-crazed and money-hungry Isobel Swift (shown in Alexander McQueen). “We were trying to exude sex with Isobel and her clothes, and we don’t do that with Alicia,” costume designer Daniel Lawson told InStyle.com. In fact, this season, he’s making Alicia look more professional and buttoned-up than ever. “She’s been doing more ensembles this season, which gives a nod to her making partner and making more money,” Lawson explained. “That means looking more put together than previous seasons. If I tried to pull pieces for her from the first or second season, it’s impossible—she’s just such a different character.” Get all the exclusive details the looks he picked last night the gallery, and follow Lawson on Twitter @GoodWifeFashion for the latest updates.

A new episode of The Good Wife premiered last night, in which the entire cast had to put on their best black-tie attire in support of the Chicago Shamrock Dinner. Julianna Margulies’s character Alicia Florrick spent the entire episode (and nine days of shooting!) in a beautiful two-tone gown by Lanvin (which was plucked from the racks of Neiman Marcus), while on-screen husband Peter (Chris Noth) looked stately in a tailsuit—one costume designer Daniel Lawson bought online!—and boss Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) came off completely judicial in a bold blue Oscar de la Renta dress pulled from the floor of Bergdorf Goodman. “For me, to see the whole thing on screen brought tears to my eyes and Julianna just looked so luminescent,” said Lawson, who worked tirelessly to dress 70 people (including the Cardinal and the waiters, too!) for this television event. “It was only the second formal event we ever had to dress the cast for,” Lawson noted, “and we wanted it to be very special.” Get all the exclusive details on last night’s looks he picked in the gallery, and follow Lawson on Twitter @GoodWifeFashion for the latest updates.

For Fans of The Good Wife: Alicia’s Gorgeous Red Dress Tonight Is by Lanvin

Mar 24, 2013 @ 4:00 pm
Good Wife GalaJeffrey Neira/CBS

The Chicago Shamrock Dinner is tonight! That only means something if you watch The Good Wife—and if you do, you’ll love tonight’s episode. Not only will the plot climax at the Shamrock Dinner, with the help of guest star Matthew Perry, the dinner itself will be a memorable black-tie moment for TV, according to costume designer Daniel Lawson. “It’s very stately affair and setting,” said Lawson. “And so I chose Alicia Florrick’s [Julianna Margulies] gown to be very stately. It was really fun to shop for and it was the first dress Julianna put on. When she did, she said, ‘This is it!’” The two-toned piece he picked was a Lanvin design he scooped up at Neiman Marcus last season. He added a black sable fur from Saks Fifth Avenue as her topper and accessorized with opera gloves. “She really is elegant, and she pulls this stuff off very well. She has such great posture.” And for loyal Alicia fans, there is much to learn from this look, Lawson noted. “When women do strapless gowns, they make the mistake of pulling it tight against the bust because they think that’s what’s going to keep it up, but really pulling it at the waist is how it keeps it up,” he said. “You see people on the red carpet with gowns smashed against their chest, when if you just pull it at the waist, it will help the fit better.” Tune in to see the classiest episode of The Good Wife tonight at 9/8c on CBS.

Mythbuster: Celebrity Stylist Cristina Ehrlich Sets the Record Straight About Horizontal Stripes

Mar 22, 2013 @ 2:00 pm

Cristina Ehrlich is Hollywood’s go-to expert for putting together solid outfits—she’s behind the some of Hollywood’s most stylish, including Amy Adams, Ashley GreeneJulianna Margulies, Tina Fey, and rising style star Allison Williams—which means she knows exactly how to pick pieces that have longevity. That’s why Coldwater Creek signed her up as their Guest Stylist for the next three months—and we caught up with her in the label’s New York store to get her keen eye on spring trends. Her biggest tip: Don’t be afraid of horizontal stripes. “I really want to help women understand that stripes do work on all body types,” she told InStyle.com. “There’s a sort of myth and fear that horizontal stripes are going to make you look bigger, and it’s really not true.” Instead, a horizontal stripe on top just needs a perfect pairing, she explained. “It’s about understanding how if have print on top that you have solid on bottom, or if you want to wear a printed bottom you wear solid on top.” Words that her clients Williams and Fey clearly live by!

The Good Wife Fashion Details: Season 4, Episode 17

Mar 18, 2013 @ 6:00 pm

A new episode of The Good Wife premiered last night, in which Julianna Margulies’s character Alicia Florrick spends the entire episode bouncing between the law offices and the coroner’s inquest room. She had to dress for the two different locations—suits for the office and coats for the chilly inquest room—which she did with the help of costume designer Daniel Lawson. “The director wanted the coroner’s office to look really cold so you could see their breath, and that’s what it looked like, but really, the room was hot,” said Lawson. “And I had everyone wearing coats, but that’s what the story called for!” Get all the details on last night’s looks he picked for Alicia (including Escada, Armani, and Akris) in the gallery, and follow Lawson on Twitter @GoodWifeFashion for the latest updates.
