The team behind Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce is back! Mad Men made its much-awaited return to AMC last night with season six’s two-hour premiere, and today, we turned to the show’s costume designer Janie Bryant (shown inset) to get all the details on how she represented the storyline through the wardrobe. “It’s always the most important to stay true to the integrity of the characters,” Bryant said of her sixth season. “I keep in mind that some change with the times, like Megan with her floppy hat and Joan with her purple suit, and also, not everybody changes, like Don.” Click through the gallery to get more insider scoop and learn how she took the cast of characters from the shores of Hawaii to the streets of New York City.

Leading up to its April 7th return, our first glimpse into the world of Mad Men’s sixth season is here! Roger Sterling, Don Draper, Joan Holloway, and Pete Campbell are back, looking as dapper as ever in these new black-and-white promo shots. In a departure from the show’s past ads, which tended to be full color and more stark, the stars—John Slattery, Jon Hamm, Christina Hendricks, Vincent Kartheiser, and more—look to be living it up, dressed in their ’60s garb and clutching their favorite accessories: cocktails. Jon Hamm in a Swimsuit! Mad Men Begins Filming Season 6 in Hawaii

Oct 25, 2012 @ 3:38 pm

After the Internet began buzzing earlier this week that Mad Men might start shooting season 6 in Hawaii, the first images have surfaced of on-screen couple Don Draper (Jon Hamm) and wife Megan (Jessica Paré) romping on the beaches of Maui in swimwear! Hamm is super-’70s—and proves once again that he can’t look bad—in colorful starfish print trunks, while Paré brings the flower power in a bright, blossom-patterned bikini. When we caught up with their co-star Vincent Kartheiser (who plays Pete Campbell) at a Macallan event earlier this month, he told us that he wasn’t sure if he should show up on set sun-kissed or pasty: “I don’t know what year it is, I don’t even know what time of year it is,” Kartheiser said. “I called them and said, ‘Should I be tan? Should I be pale?’ And they were like, ‘We can’t tell you.’” Looks like he might have his answer now!

Vincent Kartheiser on the Mad Men Wardrobe: “The Fashion Spans Eras”

Oct 11, 2012 @ 3:46 pm

Vincent Kartheiser made a very Mad Men-esque appearance at last night’s Macallan/Annie Leibovitz photo exhibit in New York, walking around the Bowery Hotel dressed in a fitted Hugo Boss suit, Scotch in one hand, co-star and girlfriend Alexis Bledel in the other. Feeling Pete Campbell vibes from across the room, we sauntered over to the actor to discuss the show’s buzzed-about fashion. “I think the most interesting thing about our show is that we have fashion not just from our era,” Kartheiser told InStyle.com about costume designer Janie Bryant‘s Emmy award-winning work on the show. “[Some men on the show are] wearing clothes from five years ago. So we have characters who are still dressing like the 1940s, characters still dressing like the 1950s, and then people who are progressive and dressing right to the height of fashion.” As far as plot progressions go, the details remain under lock-and-key. “I don’t know what year it is, I don’t even know what time of year it is,” Kartheiser said of what to expect. “I called them and said, ‘Should I be tan? Should I be pale?’ And they were like, ‘We can’t tell you.’ I guess they’ll just pale or tan me as they need.” Too bad we have to wait until the show returns to AMC in 2013 to find out.

Jon Hamm on His Style: ‘I Don’t Look Like This Every Day’

Don Draper returns to TV this Sunday! It’s hard to ignore the sexiness of the Mad Men character, played by the handsome Jon Hamm. What’s his secret? “Comb your hair, tuck your shirt in, that kind of stuff,” Hamm joked to InStyle.com at the fifth season premiere party in Los Angeles. He went on to describe his style as “unfortunate,” which is one reason why he is constantly surprised by people’s reactions to his appearance. “I think it’s 100% because of the show,” he said. “I think you probably seen pictures of me walking my dog in my neighborhood that for some reason people think are fun to publish, but I don’t look like this every day and I don’t try to look like this every day.  But when I’m supposed to be dressed up of course I try.” And he sure does look good in a suit, don’t you think? Catch more Hamm/Draper action on the return of Mad Men, premiering Sunday at 9/8c on AMC.
