Before stepping out on the red carpet for Hollywood’s biggest event of the year, celebrities sit for hours in the hair and makeup chair. But even before the big night, they’re getting primped and preened with high-tech facials and old-fashioned root touch-ups. Tracey Cunningham’s Beverly Hills salon, Meche is a must for a roster of stars with the most-wanted hair in Hollywood from Gwyneth Paltrow to Jennifer Garner. Meanwhile, Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres will be dropping by her trusted skincare guru Mila Moursi’s Beverly Hills Skin Care Institute for The Mila Moursi Global Anti-Age Treatment. Moursi says, “It’s the ultimate skin rejuvenation to naturally contour and tighten the skin, stimulate new cell production, increase blood circulation, and create healthy glowing skin.” These beauty all-stars are so indispensable they even make house calls! Anastasia stopped by Julia Roberts‘ house last night for an eyebrow prep. Click through the gallery to see other destinations on the road to the red carpet.

Jennifer Garner always stuns, whether she’s walking the red carpet or strolling the streets with her little ones. And with three kids, one can’t help but wonder “how does she do it?” A burning beauty question of our own, we sat down with the star and mother of three for our January issue to get the scoop on her beauty routine. Garner dished on how she balances her workout schedule with her beauty regimen, who she really enjoys getting dolled up for (hint: they’re under the age of 10!), and her must-have beauty products. Read on for the full Q&A with Jennifer Garner.
I see this is a ponytail day—not surprising since you’re a busy mom.
Well, my hair is clean, so let’s stop and appreciate that for a moment! But I’ll be going to work later, and that’s nice because I get blowouts on the set.
You got up early to fit in a shampoo?
Actually, I worked out at 5:30, then showered quickly. Oh, wait, no—I took the kids to school first, then came back and showered and washed my hair. The moms who show up at school already looking great that early in the morning? I don’t understand them.
You seem to be doing just fine! Do you always exercise first thing in the a.m.?
Yeah. I’ve seen more sunrises with my trainer, Valerie Waters, than with anyone else. If I don’t work out early, it’s hard for me to gear up and do it later. We do a mix of strength training and cardio. Of course, if I’m nursing, it takes a hit. If I have a sick kid, it takes a hit. It takes a lot of hits.
What about your beauty routine?
Pretty simple. I wash my face in the morning, then put on sunscreen, concealer, blush, mascara, and I’m good to go. At night, if I’m going out, I’ll use an eyebrow pencil, a cream eye shadow, and a nude lip pencil. I’m not one to do a dramatic eye or a bold red lip.
And when you’re all made up and looking gorge, is your husband good about sending compliments your way?
Oh, he notices, but it’s my daughters who really care. When I dress up, it’s for them!

Some of Hollywood’s finest gathered last night to celebrate five deserving students at the Children’s Defense Fund-Calfiornia 23rd Annual Beat the Odds Awards. The Children’s Defense Fund-California is a non-profit child advocacy organization that has worked relentlessly for 40 years to ensure a level playing field for all children. CDF-CA helps lift children out of poverty, protect them from abuse and neglect, and ensure their access to healthcare and quality education.
Five Los Angeles-area high school “stars” were honored by celebrities like Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner, and Matt Damon for beating the odds, and overcoming tremendous personal obstacles in order to achieve academic excellence. Other attendees included Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Josiah Bell, Conan O’Brien, J.J. Abrams, and Katie Lowes. Witherspoon, who serves on the CDF-CA’s National Board, spoke highly of the work the charity performs. “What I really love about this organization is that it is truly all about the kids,” the actress stated. “I am so proud to be a part of the organization.” This sentiment was echoed throughout the evening, in more ways than one. Each winning student was honored individually, and gift bags were forgone in favor of creating five gigantic gift bags for the honorees. “These kids are going to be really excited when they open them later this evening!” Witherspoon said.
As the emotional and inspiring evening came to a close, CDF President Marian Wright Edelman recognized the many accomplishments of the organization, but asserted that there is still much further to go. “Building on the leadership of young people and those that are here tonight, we can force our nation to make new choices and to really make large strides forward. We must not move backwards. We’ve got to turn this around. We’ve got to change it and we will change it,” Wright Edelman concluded.
It was a momentous night for Angelina Jolie as she was honored at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’s 5th annual Governors Awards over the weekend in Los Angeles. Accompanied by Brad Pitt and son Maddox, along with some of Hollywood’s finest—Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Garner, Octavia Spencer, Naomie Harris, Amy Adams and more—Jolie’s heavy dedication to her humanitarian work garnered her the prestigious Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, making her both the youngest person and seventh woman to receive the award, not to mention raising her Oscar statuette count to two (she won in 2000 for her supporting role in Girl, Interrupted).
During Jolie’s emotional acceptance speech, she paid tribute to her late mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who passed away in 2007 from ovarian cancer. “She was very clear that nothing would mean anything if I didn’t live a life of use to others,” Jolie said. “And I didn’t know what that meant for a long time…It was only when I began to travel and look and live beyond my home that I understand my responsibility to others.” With over 30 films to her name, Jolie has been involved in more than 40 United Nations Refugee Agency field missions, and in addition to being a mother and a director, she has founded several charitable organizations, and she’s still doing more. “I will do as my mother asked and do the best I can with this life, be of use, and to stand here today means that I did as she asked and if she were alive, she’d be very proud.” Jolie joins fellow Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award recipients—Oprah Winfrey, Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, Quincy Jones, and others —and continued the night in celebrating fellow honorees Steve Martin, Angela Lansbury, and Piero Tosi.
The 2013 Toronto International Film Festival is in full swing, and the stars are celebrating! InStyle, along with Focus Features, Remstar Films and Max Mara, hosted the cast of Dallas Buyers Club for a private dinner to celebrate the world premiere of their film at Hudson Kitchen in Toronto. “They’re incredible people,” Leto (in a Hugo Boss jacket) said of his castmates, Jennifer Garner and Matthew McConaughey (both in Dolce & Gabbana) before sitting down for the intimate meal. And incredible people give incredible performances — the morning after the premiere, critics said this movie had Oscar buzz written all over it. Hollywood invaded our Northern neighbors! The stars are in Toronto for the annual Toronto International Film Festival, and InStyle crossed the border to get the scoop on the buzziest movies and talent to come from the fest, including Dallas Buyers Club stars Jennifer Garner, Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom star Naomie Harris (shown above in Alexander McQueen). We set up a pop-up portrait studio at the Windsor Arms Hotel so the casts from the top films could stop by and get snapped by photographer Henny Garfunkel. We also have two pairs of Google Glasses on site, which grabbed the attention of The Last of Robin Hood star Dakota Fanning (in Marni), who tested them out. “Wow, this is crazy weird!” she reacted.
