Consider the fall/winter 2014 collections a lesson in geometry. At Proenza Schouler, the duo Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough took color-blocking to an extreme, slicing shapes and piecing together a mash-up of speckled prints, cobalt blue and leather panels. The main focus of the J. Mendel collection was Gille Mendel’s reinterpretation of plaid. “I really extracted the plaid motif, and distorted it, creating asymmetrical designs and using bold colors,” he tells InStyle.com. The result? A line-up of incredibly rich, graphic looks. And at Carolina Herrera, it was clear the designer has a fascination for geometry, continuing the angular geo-lines from spring 2014 into fall, with a selection of “geometric-focused hand-painted prints.”
Music’s biggest night out is only a few days away! And where there’s music, there’s fashion – sometimes gorgeous and glam, others theatrically thrilling (cue: Lady Gaga’s egg incubator). Whichever way the stars choose to dress, it’s always got us – and everyone else – talking. So in anticipation of the celeb-filled award ceremony, we are looking back at our favorite looks that landed on last year’s red carpet with our A-List tool.
Beyonce hit the scene in a color-block Osman jumpsuit, Florence Welch arrived in a custom green Givenchy gown (which was modified from the house’s Fall 2009 Couture collection), Taylor Swift took the plunge in a Grecian-style J. Mendel column, and Rihanna looked chic in a crimson, semi-sheer Azzedine Alaïa gown.
It’s no secret that musicians (thankfully!) aren’t afraid to take some risks – hello, Lady Gaga and Miley - and we can only hope that there’s no-holding-back this Sunday night. For now, take your hand at being a fashion editor and choose your favorite looks from last year’s awards, then share them with your friends on Facebook.
And be sure to check back on Instyle.com, we’ll have everything you need to know about buzz-worthy looks that hit the red carpet for the 56th Annual Grammy Awards airing this Sunday.

On her hit show Homeland — whose season three series finale airs Sunday, Dec. 15 on HBO — Claire Danes tends to wear staid suits (and the occasional hospital gown). But on the red carpet, the three-time Emmy winner and four-time Golden Globe winner is a style pro. She’s been walking in the pop of flash bulbs for almost two decades now, ever since 1995’s My So-Called Life made her a bold-faced name. While most people would be intimidated navigating the tricky style waters, Danes approaches her red carpet appearances with a solid confidence, telling us in 2004, “Armed with good shoes and a good frock, I’m good to go!” She takes a minimalist approach to her style, donning sleek silhouettes with clean necklines and letting a pop of bold color or dazzling fabric bring the glamour.
The biggest stars in television are arriving at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles for the 65th Annual Primetime Emmys, and we have all of the details on what they’re wearing as they make their way down the red carpet. Park and Recreations star Aubrey Plaza wore a lace Marios Schwab dress, one of the night’s presenters and New Girl actress Zooey Deschanel went for an ice blue J. Mendel blue gown, Project Runway super host Heidi Klum sparkled in a sexy pomegranate design by Versace, and Mad Men‘s Jessica Paré looked gorgeous in an Oscar de la Renta dress straight from the spring 2014 runway. Kerry Washington turns 36 today! The star of Scandal and Django Unchained is a staple on our Look of the Day list, and is known for taking risks with her style. But she always looks gorgeous, whether she’s wearing (from left) embellished sheer Miu Miu at the Golden Globes, bright and colorful J. Mendel, white lace Rodarte at the SAG Awards, or a printed Giles gown. She is also quite adventurous with her hairstyles, and impeccably dressed in her role as Olivia Pope on ABC’s Scandal. Here’s wishing the inspirational star the best of birthdays!

The 2012 MTV Europe Music Awards took place in Frankfurt last night! Germany’s own Heidi Klum hosted the evening, playing up her supermodel expertise by exclusively wearing Versace for the red carpet and during the show, kicking off her fashion show with a lace-up teal and gold design from the label’s spring collection. It was just one of the over-the-top wow-gowns to hit the red carpet, where she was joined by Kim Kardashian (in a Stephane Rolland design with a high-low hem), Taylor Swift (in ivory—not red!—J. Mendel), and Rita Ora (in Marchesa‘s blood red ballgown). Click through the gallery to see more MTV EMA 2012 fashion!
The last time this many J. Mendel dresses were in one place, it was the Emmys! Only the designer of the label himself—Gilles Mendel, shown with partner Kylie Case—could dress so many stars for one night again, this time for the Third Annual Autumn Party hosted by the Philanthropic Society Los Angeles, held at the London Hotel Rooftop in Los Angeles. “Any actress, and any beautiful woman, is part of my dream to dress,” Mendel told InStyle.com of his Hollywood following, which included party guests Brittany Snow, Sophia Bush, Jamie Lynn-Sigler, New Girl’s Hannah Simone, and Garcelle Beauvais. “I love when you get into one of his dresses, you really feel like you’re a woman,” Snow told InStyle.com before posing for photos in a silver strapless cocktail look by the designer with gal pal Sophia Bush. “The way the clothes are made make you feel really classy and put together.” The two stuck side-by-side all night, sipping Champagne along with the rest of the 400 attendees in candlelit cabanas overlooking the Los Angeles skyline—a beautiful setting to watch a fashion show of J. Mendel’s new resort collection, which also took place at the soiree. The evening benefited the Children’s Institute, Inc., a non-profit dedicated to child abuse and neglect treatment and prevention. In a year when every woman on Earth (and their mothers) read E.L. James’s Fifty Shades of Grey, the color now associated with BDSM-obsessed fictional Seattle businessman Christian Grey made a strong showing at the 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. American Horror Story’s Connie Britton sparkled from head to toe in an ashy Andrew Gn halter dress, Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland co-designed her beaded dove Notte by Marchesa look, Homeland’s Morena Baccarin chose a deep-plunging Basil Soda slate design, Mad Men bombshell Christina Hendricks worked a silver curve-hugging Christian Siriano mermaid gown, and Revenge’s Emily VanCamp chose a foggy J. Mendel gown (one of a number of stars who donned a Gilles creation). Looks like everyone has a little Anastasia Steele in them—or at least the love of something grey!
